Week in Florida - Hire Car choices...

Girlfriend and I are going to Florida in a few weeks, and I've been looking at the hire car options.

Found that Avis offer a number of more interesting cars, for fairly decent money. We're there for 8 days. Of the cars they offer, the ones below are the ones that caught my attention:

Ford Mustang, for approx $440 (so about £220)

Nissan 350Z is $690 (so about £345)

Pontiac Solstice is $425 (so about £215)

Of those, I guess really the Mustang and the Solstice are the main contenders. I've driven a 350Z before, and it's good, but they don't sell the Solstice in the UK and it's meant to be a pretty fun car to drive, from what i've read. The Mustang obviously seems the right choice though for getting about in the US, and I'm unlikely to drive one otherwise either...

However, there is another option to throw a spanner in the works...

Corvette C6, at around $1100 (so about £550).

Downside is that they only offer an auto  But, I do like them. I've always said if they made a right-hand drive Z06 I'd buy one in an instant, but they don't. They're rare over here, and though I could rent one in the UK if I wanted, it'd be a lot more than £500 for a week. But then do I want to spend that much on a hire car, when I could be spending it on other goodies whilst I'm on holiday.... (or on goodies for the Z4M when I get back!).

Anyone fancy helping me decide? lol

I spent a few days in Tampa/Orlando area. I rented a 328i from Enterprise. It was an auto but still very enjoyable to drive. I'd take it over the Mustang.

The Solstice has absolutely no storage space! I would go for the Mustang, and ask if you can get the GT model :)

Yeah. From what I know, I'd probably agree with you. But I figure I can take the opportunity to drive something different that I can't get over here in the UK, hence taking one of the options above....

Tbh, of the three top choices, if I just wanted the best car, i'd probably take the 350Z... but like I say, I've already driven one over here and fancied trying something new.

If you're gonna be in Florida, you gotta get a convertible! I'd choose either a convertible Mustang or the Solstice.

If you're gonna get the Solstice though, make sure you catch a cab or shuttlebus to the hotel first 'cause your luggage won't fit in the trunk.

Or you could get a Cobalt like takedown8 :fuelfire:

but seriously - get a Mustang GT convertible. It has tons of trunk space too....

Whilst trying to find out if the Avis Mustang was a GT (it's not as far as I can see) I stumbled upon a forum thread elsewhere and found out that Hertz also offer the C6... in a Convertible! Just done a check and they have one, although it's only available from the day after we arrive. So might arrange an econo-box to get us to the hotel, and then swap it over the next day!

They also do the special "Hertz Edition" Shelby GT convertibles (which I imagine are awesome!!), but they're a fair bit more (with discount codes I can get the C6 Convertible for about $700, but the GT is around $990).

Would have thought the C6 was perfectly respectible though? :P (except knowing how quick those things are, i'm going to come back wanting that ESS kit for the M!)

OK, before you get all hissy hissy, takedown8, I never even started this one. And I'm not touching it either.

Nice one, enfield

My vote's with the Mustang. Can't get any more American out of those choices. :D

Ahh, the good 'ol days!

That is one hot mustang! Hope that thing's got air conditioning!

As stated, the Soltice has no trunk room. You will need your luggage delivered for you. Go with the Vette. Where abouts in Florida are you heading to?

Well went with a C6 Convertible from Hertz in the end. Got a great quote (about $100 a day - which I thought was good anyway, especially with the exchange rate at the moment!).

Staying in Orlando. Done the Disney thing before, but missed out a couple of places so will do a few of the theme parks but not all. Going to head to Tampa, and Clearwater. My girlfriend has family friends that live there. Might head up to Daytona for a day too.

Anyone got any other tips on places to go?

Wish we were going over today though, as an old school mate of mine has just started his career in Indycar Pro Lights and they're racing at St Pete's this weekend. But not heading out until the 20th...
