Web pages not loading

I've just taken delivery of a brand new 28i, with internet specified as an option. It loads the home page OK (Google home page by default) and I can carry out a Google search and get a search results page returned. However, if I then try to follow one of the links to another web page I get an error message "Secure connection to server not possible. SSL certificate validation error." The only available option then is "OK", which returns me to the previous page. I also get the same issue if I enter a URL directly, and I've tried to access several mainstream websites (e.g. BBC, BMW) with the same results. Bizarrely I can get on to the BMW Motorrad UK site - not sure what that proves. I have tried suppressing pop-ups and HTTPS pop-ups and it makes no difference.

The "product genius" (what a joke) at my local dealer is clueless and BMW customer services are stumped too. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced the problem?

Thanks in anticipation.

Welcome.

Iirc some of the online services take a few days to activate if you've took delivery from brand new. I may be wrong tho.

Let's see some pics of your new pride and joy.

Thanks for the response Carol. I think the service is activated, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get a Google search result returned or indeed get on to the BMW Motorrad UK site (although why that particular site should load, I've no idea). The message I'm getting would suggest that there is some issue with the way the vehicle’s web browser is reading and/or validating SSL certificates, but that's pushing my technical knowledge to its limits!

When I can work out how to upload pics on here, I will. Apart from the internet issue and an intermittent problem playing tracks from my iPhone, I'm very happy with the car. It's a continuation of my mid-life crisis (which I can highly recommend) - I've just sadly ended a six-year love affair with a fluorescent green Ford Focus RS Mk2

Long shot, but is the date and time set correctly? Client-side (i.e. browser) cert validation can fail if it isn't.

Maybe BMW Motorrad UK uses http rather than https?

Can you enter a site including the http bit, e.g.:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

rather than:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/
or:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

From these reports it seems you might have found a limitation of the web browser rather than a problem with your car:

2011 car:

2015 car:

Thanks for the advice Mobeer, but HTTP or HTTPS makes no difference - still the same error message. I went to the dealer last Friday and their "product genius" again confirmed that he'd never seen this error message before and the car's web access behaviour was not what he would expect. The issue has been escalated to BMW so we'll see what they have to say. At the moment, I wish I'd not specified Internet and saved myself £95!

What happens if you type an IP address into the URL bar i.e 212.58.244.71, can you get to the BBC web page ?

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.bbc.net.uk
Addresses: 212.58.244.71
212.58.244.70
Aliases: www.bbc.co.uk

Thanks for the suggestion. I have just tried the IP address you suggested in my Z4 browser but it returned a 404 error, page does not exist.

how about BT.com ?

Name: http://www.bt.com 193.113.9.162

Also try adding a port on the end i.e 193.113.9.162:80

Thanks for the further advice. Yes, I was able to get on to a version of the BT site using the IP address (but without the port), but it was like a text-only version of the site. I'm still unable to access many web sites using a URL and it looks like BMW has made matters worse today as half of the connected drive services that I'm subscribed to have disappeared from the list displayed on the iDrive screen and they're now saying I've got to take it in to a dealer for a software update. Nightmare!

No I haven't sorted it - the web page issue that is, rather than loss of connected drive issue. I must admit the car has been tucked away for the last couple of months but I'll be getting it out of the garage soon, so I will start harassing my dealer again! In the meantime, if you find a fix please let me know.

The loss of connected drive services issue was sorted. It was due to the fact I'd put a cherished plate on the car and, although I'd informed BMW and sent them a copy of the V5, they still managed to cock it up! It didn't have to go in for a software update - it was fixed remotely.

Although I don't have any knowledge on this BMW issue here, referring to the error message given "Secure connection to server not possible. SSL certificate validation error.", I have had a little bit of experience in my job involving problems with "SSL certificates".

If you Google for SSL certificates, you will read that they are just small data-file certificates, which ensure Secure Access to another Server, where in my role I sometimes encounter problems where an SSL certificate has recently been updated on one hosting Server, causing my other Systems that use it to suddenly not have access until the updated SSL certificate is updated on my calling System.

If this BMW Internet option is having to connect to some BMW hosting server, my best guess is that the SSL Certificate may need to be updated on the Z4, but it obviously seems a little crazy that there may be any requirement to update such SSL certificates for this option.

Thanks both, I will keep you updated on progress. I have a cherished plate transfer due soon too so dreading that hassle now!

My thanks too for Billy's input. Looking at his link to the Bimmerfest post, and relating that back to some earlier suggestions on this thread, I am tending to think the issue may be the antiquated browser BMW has installed, rather than an underlying fault as such. I shall be giving my dealer further grief shortly.
