Weak fuel mixture

I bought an early 2.2 a few months ago and had the emissions light come on straight away, found a split hose which I replaced and cleared the fault, no problem for some time and then the light started to come on when on motorway trips after about fifty miles and usually while driving in the 50 limits when backed off in fifth gear, so tried doing the 50 in fourth and no light came on but a check still revealed that it is running weak on bank 1 & 2 in the low range so how can I adjust this? Air filter is clean and I can see no other air leaks, engine pulls well no coughing etc.

Also, although the clutch seems to work fine it will indicate over temp and excessive slippage as a fault code, the only time it slips is if I hit the accelerator and am slow dropping the clutch so understandable but I understand that there is a valve to slow the fluid return and prevent stalling something which some modify, is this likely? It actually bites well and it's easy to spin the wheels so apart from the codes I wouldn't know of such a problem, has anyone had experience of this?

Third admittedly minor problem, is the indicators, sometimes when indicating I can hear the usual relay sound from behind the dash, sometimes it is silent, sometimes it changes during the operation! But, the lights are operating normally, so, is there a relay or a sound generator which can be replaced or do I need to check the instrument cluster?

The large rubber elbow at the engine intake is notorious for splitting, and will cause a lean mixture due to excess air bypassing the maf. They are only about £23 from bmw. Mine had a small spilt, but when I took it off it had several more that I couldn't see from external examination.

While the clutch may be failing, you can at least remove the delay valve and see if that works. There are diy instructions on the forum, and note that you don't need to buy anything, just remove it.

Thanks, I'll remove the valve when I have time, I had thought it needed opening and drilling through from something I read weeks ago, before the problem, Mike, you did my roof motor a couple of months agoI replaced the hose you talk of as that had the original split but everything is tight and secure and the lean mix is only on banks 1&2 I think at low throttle, sorry can't remember the wording on the code reader!

Are you using a generic reader? If so it might not give enough info to diagnose. How far from me are you? Happy to have a look with the launch, which will probably give more detailed info.

I removed the valve as advised and the clutch is now much better, controllable!

I also removed the intake hoses and found that one of the alignment lugs was lifted to one side, I haven't gone into the graphs on my reader to check the levels but no emissions lights have come on since.

The relay sound on the indicators is still there or not at times but the lights are working fine, now looking at wheels, mine are 108's with the outer rims slightly kerbed and lacquer lifting, I think that a refurb is expensive being on split rims so I'm thinking of Ellipsoids or MV1's for a period look. Also being one piece easier to tidy up! But which models fit? The E46 MV1's Staggered seem to be readily available.

After getting hold of a Carly unit and my son to operate it, we found that the problem appeared to be low pressure in the fuel system and then that the fuel cap wasn't sealing and the seal was actually leaking and wet with fuel even though the tank was near to empty so I ordered a new cap of the correct part number and the pressure problem has gone but I'm using more fuel around town and on short runs, I'll take it for a dual carriageway cruising run and see what that gives as town traffic is so changeable at times. more investigations show that since removing the CDV there have been no readings of clutch problems
