OMGoodness, please don't do that to a Z3, it's one thing to build a fake Ford, something entirely different building a fake Ferrari with half the engine missing :poke:
I wouldn't worry too much the chances of pondrew owning this long enough to complete it is very very slim.

Harsh but fair! :D

never been a fan of pretend cars but each to their own
Me neither TBH but they are the most beautiful shape of any car ever made IMHO. I can't afford a real one at circa £12million.
I know the car in the photo and it is a really good one!

Kit prices seem very reasonable and it must be fun to actually build one.

Something I always wanted to do but knew I would get bored and give up and I wouldn’t finish the project .

That Wizard bloke bought Z3 was it 6-8k dollars, same car here would be 1500 quid.
Have you seen the prices of Z3s? You can't get a decent one (with a six pot) for less than around £5k. They are more expensive than the early Z4s now!

Not the kit I want ain't! They are being made by the one so prices reflect this; that and the fact that those who do have kits know you can't get them anywhere else.
Just the brightwork; bumpers, front grilles, side vents and the headlight rings come to over £4,000 (and are only really made by one company in SE Asia). Then you have a bespoke interior, custom exhaust has to be made, wheels (to fit the Z3 hubs), replica gauges made one set at a time, etc, etc. It is not going to be a cheap hobby. I am budgeting on £40k all in with paint and the donor car.

Mind you the last one to sell at auction a couple of weeks ago in this Country went for £70k. There was one sold recently in the US (same kit as mine which he imported from here) where the builder had put a 7 litre LS7 in it. It reached $267,000! Then the buyer stacked it 8 miles later!

That is a worry, yes. But once started there is no going back so either you have to finish it, or sell it incomplete and lose thousands and thousands. I don't like losing money!

Years of late cold nights out in the garage, cold grease covered hands with cuts and grazes and no end in sight. And that's just dismantling the Z3. Then time sourcing all the bits to build the car and the bank account dwindling, then the same thing building the kit. Well, Pondrew I admire your strength of character, it's way better that mine.

Thank goodness I have heating in the garage for when I buy the project car

Can't be bothered to comment on the WBAC process but I'm intrigued to see a photo of your impending Z3 acquisition - just to encourage you here's one of mine
Meh! :poke: Not really interested in the Z3 TBH (no offence).
Within a month the body panels will be removed and the 'project' will begin.

All I can say is it is a low mileage (54k) 3 litre M54 (super rare so I'm told) in some sort of blue. Other than that I have no idea! :o
So you'll bugger it up and maybe keep it as long as Xmas?
What a waste.

I'm going to ask Stuart to do that bit for me!

Spent most of last week making the garage 'fit for purpose'. Insulated, ventilated and now heated (as of this afternoon). And a skip full of rubbish outside. Two benches, one on castors. I am fine at all that sort of stuff, but know next to nothing about cars!

WBAC prices reflect the prices the cars sell for at auction to the trade, popular cars - small hatchbacks sell well, large cars and specialist sports cars don’t because demand is much less, it’s as simple as that.

This is not true, quite often car prices are crazy in auctions and not only for small cars but sport premium and prestige too. In fact back in 2019 I bought mine at auction, if I remember correctly book value was around £8500 I was expecting it make over book so had my sight on paying maximum £10,000. The bidding went crazy and I was bidding against a trade buyer and ended up paying close to £12000 (including buyers fees).

Having previously been in the car trade for over 10 years this is not unsual and happens all the time. WBAC if I am not mistaken are owned by BCA, they give you price knowing that they will make a profit when it sells via one of their auctions and then not to mention the buyers fee they charge on top too! A very profitable business if you ask me. :D

Hardly any bargains at auctions anymore, especially once you've paid the fees etc. Even the motor salvage auctions have become expensive.
