wax/polish

A wax goes on at the end and is a barrier to protect the paint work, creats a shiny wet look amd makes rain water bead off
Polish is used for removing light scratches and swirl marks used with elbow grease or a machine polisher use this after washing and claying but before applying wax

As Sam says, a wax doesn't have any abrasives in it, used to enhance and protect all the hard work the polish has done, I've just bought some 'Harly Wax' it's like covering your car in butter

so I've use a clay bar and then a poorboys black hole and then a sealer and then was planning on using a wax after. should I have used a polish at some point or is the black hole a type of polish?
one thing its taken ages so it had better been worth it.

Black hole is a wax I think which has very low polishing qualities.
Normal stages would be....
Wash,
Clay bar whilst car is wet
I'd wash again but with fresh water and thoroughly cleaned wash mitt
Then it's out with the polish
Wax or a sealant to finish.
I've used Meguiars alot in the past, but am trying Mer this time but there are many products out there. I'd recommend using the same brand polish as wax. Different brands obviously have different compounds/qualities and their respective products do work with each other better than mixing

Well, that's my ten pence worth. The pro detailers will have more and better info but for noobs like me, I like to keep it simple.

But unless the car is specifically swirly or has lots of light scratches I would miss out clay and polish and go witj

Then a light pad and final cut polish
Then wax it
I normally use the da to wax its loads quicker, slowest speed and a wax pad

your not right miss out the clay! my god that took a long time... infact this whole process has taken a long time!
I've used poorboys throughout. I read about and found really good reviews and stuff about their products and after using the wheel sealer I thought I would give them a try.
I bought the black hole as I'm not sure about using abrasive stuff yet. i made a real mess of some gel coat fibreglass trying to fill some holes and sanding back so I've a bit wary of doing anything that is abrasive.
i did 2 coats of the poorboys and i have to say it works well. you could see it getting better. i think next time i will think of using something like their SSR range first maybe....
i used the ex-p glaze ontop.
after all this stuf its really nice to touch very smooth and seems very shiny. im not sure when it was last done like this. certainly not for a couple of years. its come up a treat.

Bought my car in feb finally got round to polishing after reading a few posts here I went for the meguires 3 stage I did not have swirls so did not clay I found wd40 got rid of tar which was quite handy , I have only ever waxed before and nothing else , but after doing this I was blown away by the results , if the car looked as good as this when I bought it I would have probably had to pay a lot more ! I washed it used a mitt then microfibre clothes all new to me but I'm going by what recommendations I have found here and I'm a convert . Gonna do my daughters Mini Cooper next when I can lift my arm !

ill consider something like that next time. maybe even a DA. the poorboys black hole has a light car equvalent and worked a treat. the first coat did it well but the second really braught it up nice.
the claying made it smooth too. whilst its a right pain in the arse to do i think it was worth it.
if you have a costco nearby or know anyone who will go for you then i recomend their pack of microfire dusters. ive been constantly using them and im only half way down. every new product was a new cloth and any contact with the floor was a new one too. the plan is to wash them all when im done. tbh for the cost you could even just throw them away and buy a new pack! (but thats a bit wastefull)

clay bars do not get rid of swirls, they remove bits of tar and stuff that doesn't come off from a normal wash. it then gives you a clean and bare base to lay down the polish and wax.

yes... infact for me it looked a bit worse after the clay till i filled them in! but it was silky smooth and just rubbing your hand along the wing felt ace....

Thats because they clay pulls all the fillers off that were hiding all you marks before
I personally wouldn't clay my car if I wasnt going to machine it after
