Water Pump failure signs Z4 2.5SI 2006

Hi

Firstly before I start, here area few specs on my Car.
Purchased sep15. Now has 43k on the clock. previous owner hardly drove it. 2006 Plate.

Returned from a long holiday, so had not drive it for 3 weeks. Drove to work and 20 mins into the drive, no traffic, noticed the temperature gauge totally high and red light come on and beep. Stopped car. Let it cool down as advised by my Independent mechanic and managed to get it to a place and topped up with water.
After that everything ok for a month.
This morning again exactly the same thing. So stopped car and topped up with water, but to my surprise water level full. Let it cool down and managed to get it to the garage.
At the garage let it cool down and after 30 mins start it up and left it running idle and temperature gauge ok.
Independent mechanic(been using him for many years, so trust worthy. Told me probably the electric pump on its way out. advised to be replaced. so I am getting it replaced. 700 pounds!! ouch!!

What I thought is when a water pump fails that's it .. it fails.. can not drive no longer. my tempreture gauage has been intermittent.
Getting the water pump replaced tomorrow. I hope it is as the indy dealer said.

Hi and welcome.

Water pumps not cheap on these being electric.

Would be nice if you introduced yourself and post some details and pics of your car.

Mods might also like to move to the E85 section.

Apologies as yes it's my first time in this site and am finding a lot of information valuable .

The mechanic said that too as they are electric more expensive . Just was wondering the intermittent high tempreture means the pump is on its way out ? I thought once they pack up they pack up 100% and not gradually .

Sounds like the pump is seizing intermittently (maybe capacitor common on electric pumps) causing temp to rise as a result, change ASAP

Symtoms sound like the water pump or thermoststat - mine did the exact same thing last summer. I ordered a Pierburg Waterpump from Eurocarparts approx £350 I think - this is the same maunufacturer who make the part for BMW. Ordered a thermostat from BMW approx £90 - its is highly recommencded to change the thermostat at the same time, and some BMW coolant (make sure you use OEM coolant also). Lastly dont forget the three new aluminium bolts.

I installed mine myself, not a hard job if your ok on the tools (look on youtube for an install video) :thumbsup:
 
Did your mechanic run a diagnostic check,if the pump is playing up their should be errors showing up.
 
I have not fitted one but looking on u tube all you need to do is bleed it via the ignition switch.
It seems your man is not familiar with this set up,I would take it to someone who knows BMW .
 
All done . And yes he knew how to bleed it via the ignition switch and also mapped it via the lap top. Crazy how much work needs to be done just for a water pump. But all done and fingers crossed so far so good . Thanks for all the advice guys!
