Water on the right side of the trunk

hey guys, fairly new to the forum but the search function works great and i usually find all of my answers there

im having one issue though that i cant seem to find while searching. i just purchased an 03 z4 and had a little incident yesterday.

i found a small puddle of water on the right (bevelled) side of the trunk.

weird thing is, it rained harder 2 days ago and the trunk was dry.

the only difference is, when it finally was nice for about an hour or 2 yesterday, i decided to put the top down for a bit and about 20 minutes later i went to my trunk and i saw the puddle. got the wet-vac out and sucked it all out and then it started pouring again for about an hour.

so i checked the trunk again and it was dry?

any idea why this would happen? if the top is still (kinda) wet when i put it down, could this cause the puddle on the right side of the trunk?

i appreciate your help! :D

Welcome to the forum

Didn't think we should drop the hood if it's wet :?

Don't know about the water - some people here have had similar - maybe this thread could shed some light?

hey thanks gannet!

im thinking this might be the issue then. gotta remember to check the cover and make sure its dry before lowering it down.

just one question, someone mentioned that the problem could be "the cover where the rear elastic gets caught on the rear seal".

what exactly does that mean? or better yet, where exactly should i be looking to see if this is the issue mine is giving me?

I was getting a wet boot recently. I found that one of the screws for the tail lights was not screwed down ( look at the top of the light unit with the boot open) resulting in a slight lifting of the light unit. This in turn was allowing water that would normally drain away, was able to enter the boot. Pushed the screw fully home and have not had the problem again.

Same here, could see the droplets forming on the underside of the screw retainer, simple tighten sorted for me too.

Thread resurection but seemed silly to start a new one when I have the same issue. I currently have a cracked high level centre brake light without about a 1cm squared hole in it, could rain channel from here down to the bevelled right side of the boot? Will check the screws on the lights later.

I think it's possible, I've removed the taillight on my Z4 and it's the taillight unit that seals off the boot froom outside. So if that's damaged it could cause leaks. I had to replace my taillight as I cracked mine (+- the equivilent of $270 we get ripped off more than other countries by BMW). Before I replaced mine I glued the light back together using Q-Bond and sealed it with clear silicone.

I have also had issues with leaks in my boot, but that is caused by the car getting wet when it's parked facing an uphill. The water is unable to seap out of the near useless drains and eventually runs into the boot.

Solution to that is to park on a level surface and ensure your drains are cleared (tutorial on this site).

Be careful of your amplifier getting wet, as I had to replace mine at great cost (BMW wanted +-$1400 for a new one) thanks to water getting in.

Got it sorted, it was the screw on top of the O/S tail light assembly, screwed it tight and boot has stayed dry even through all this horrendous rain over the past couple of days.
