Water leak

The secondary hole in the lowest point of the door seal was a sort of secondary fix. Def. check the membrane too as I guarantee if the car is a few years old it will have been torn by someone in its lifetime.

Door card is just a case of undoing the vari0ous torx screws and torx bolts and pulling it off from the bottom.

Once the door cover is off there is a large white membrane made of a poly type material covering the entire inside of the door, fixed on with a disgusting bitumen glue :)

I've discovered a similar issue with a leak in the drivers footwell. Slightly different though as the top of the mat isn't wet, it's only the floor carpet underneath and the bottom of the mat. Although it is dampest on the side by the door, there is no evidence of it running down from the door as with the picture shown earlier in this thread so I'm not convinced a door seal is the issue.

Anyone got any other bright ideas on routes for water to get down there?

I had one last winter but it ended up in the rear under the passenger seat.

Im pressuming it was a drain hole as whenever i washed the car soad suds would also come in.

Gonna have to clean the drains this weekend I think to prevent it happening again this year.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I am having this problem with my car to no avail.

I am getting an identical leak in my passenger footwell and have had the seal that runs along the bottom of the door cache near the "z4" scuff guard and the door membrane replaced. Water is only getting in when the car is parked on a downhill slope during rain.

Is there anything else that can be done short of replacing ALL door seals??

Don't park downhill when it rains?

Sorry, couldn't resist. Are you sure the roof drains are clear? Only other thing I can think of is to try to induce a leak with garden hose spray to locate the ingress path.

I have the exact same leak in the picture as well. Leaves a wet spot under the mat, as the water seems to run down the sill and gets between the mat and floor. This is obviously a design flaw of some sort, as it seems all our Z4s do it to some degree. Mine only happens with a very heavy rain or if I am using a high powered spray on the car to wash. I think it's getting in at the top edge of the door on the outside by the A piller (same area on the outside where the tweeter is), running down between the door and the back of the fender, and then can't escape off the sill fast enough and backs up over the ledge. I could be wrong, but that makes sense to me.

bcworkz, that's what I have been doing and looks like I must continue to do that...

My last option is to have ALL passenger door sills replaced for around $1000AUD so this will be my next option when I can be bothered to book it in. I think the water ingress has damaged one of my passenger seat motors as the one that slides the seat front and back isn't sounding too healthy at the moment...

I just had a desperate times call for desperate measures idea. You could try adjusting the door hinges and strike inwards slightly. The outer panel will no longer be flush with the wings, but very few would notice the small difference I'm thinking is needed. Don't over adjust the strike or the door can be very difficult to unlatch.

I don't even know if this is a good idea. Proceed with care.

Right so I have just went out to my car and felt the side of my floor mats damp. I lifted them out and the floor is completely soaked under each :( Worrying as I haven't hoovered the car in a few weeks and who knows how long its been wet in there.

From what Ive read above, am I right in saying that I need to take the door card off to get to this door membrane which is the cause of the leaking/wet floor? Can I assume that it is broken/torn due to the leaking and will need replacing on both sides? And where is the cheapest place to buy these and is it a hard job? Thanks

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I had the same issue recently, took the cover off above the passenger footwell ( inside the car) took the seat out, so I could lay inside with a torch, got the wife to pour water on the screen and I could see the water run in, had a look and the plastic part at the base of the screen had lifted ever so slightly, pressed on it, heard it clip back in a it seems fine now. Just got to sort out the airbag light out now, after not reading advice on here properly  hope this helps

Unfortunately, water can get in for any number of reasons, but the door membrane does seem to be a common culprit. The only reason I can imagine how the membrane gets 'torn' is somebody cut into it to repair a mechanical bit and didn't properly reseal it. Just shoddy workmanship is the cause. Whether both sides need doing depends on how likely you think this clod was into both sides. OTOH, once you figure out how to get the card off on one side, the other side will be a doddle, so you may as well take a look.

There's only a couple difficulties, one is knowing where all the fasteners are hidden, but there are plenty of online references to help. The other is the top connection can be very resistant to efforts to release it. Depending on the damage, it may be possible to repair the membrane, or just cover the whole door with common 6 mil polyethylene sheeting, glued on with silicone sealant. Or that may be another of my bad ideas? :?

I have exactly the same problem and have isolated the entry point to the point at the base of the A pillar where it meets the door. I am thinking of replacing the door frame seal which goes up the A pillar - has anyone tried this and did it work? Another option could be to "pad" this seal out - thoughts from fellow sufferers? :headbang:

I have also had this problem the last few weeks for the first time! The door has never been opened up since i have owned the car from new.... I have found the solution to be to park it the other way round on the drive. Something about it pointing downhill causes the water to get in. :o

Hi - I have a water leak on my drivers side door! Looks just like the pic earlier in the thread, but on the drivers side. It is peeing in!

I replaced the membrane - it had been removed in the past to do the regulator and bonded back on, but the adhesive appeared to have dried out. Fitted a new one with a bead of dumdum all the way around, but still pouring in.

I have just fitted a new door seal and nothing has improved! I am going to look at the membrane again - perhaps I missed a bit!

I assume there are drain holes for the door that need to be free running - any suggestion on where that are and what else it could be?? Driving me nuts!

As others have said...and having had this just recently, while my cars in getting repairs done, they found a cpl leaks(after doing work),which i hadnt had before now.

The culprits were..
1.DoorSeal9now renewed)
2.Membrane on Pass door had been slightly loose...which then allows water to sit inside part of the door til its closed, which then finds its way onto/under the carpet.
3.The Polen filter tray apparently has clips on it,and 1 of them wasnt located right, allowing water to seep into the cabin, and also under the pass footwell carpet.

3 simple wee things that can happen easily, but if not caught quickly could be bad news,i guess.

Shows u the importance of re-fitting membranes/seals/filter housings properly.
BMW Bodyshop where my car is at present, said they have even seen these things happen as a result of work by other dealers!!

door off and a new membrane if ripped or clean off the old glue and apply new glue in the area where the door dips in below the motor (you will see what I mean when you get the door panel off) its a design flaw IMO water drops onto that part of the seal/glue and degrades it over time.
