Water ingress into boot on Z4MR

For the last few weeks, my Z4MR has had water leaking into the boot. At first it was filling the left hand compartment bit with water (would get about 2 inches deep). And now it's spread so the whole boot is wet and I suspect growing mould

I've checked the aerial, rear lights, boot lid rubber seal and all looks OK. I can't find anyone small enough / willing to get inside the boot with a torch while I spray water on it

Does anyone have any ideas?

There are a few things it could be.

The first thing to check are the vents, located below the rear light housing. If you remove the side carpets (the bits that go around the rear shock mounts, you'll see 2 square black vents.

Replace these and see if that makes an improvement.

If not, check the boot seal is seated correctly.

Also, check the rear light gaskets (the foam bit on the back of them) aren't deteriorated.

All these are cheap and easy checks/fixes.

I've done those on mine and still have water ingress on the right hand compartment (the small bit where hardly anything seems to fit). :headbang:

Have you checked the roof drains as this would seem the most obvious first look for any water in the boot especially that sort of volume.

Ben g, I've checked the boot seal and that looks good and have also checked the light gaskets. I'll check the others tonight, thanks

Stuartt, I've checked the roof drains and have already removed the rubber grommets about 4 months ago so i domt think it's that

Thanks for the help so far guys

Have you checked the air vent under the lights? That has been reported as a regular source of boot water ingress on all Z4 models.

3rd brake light? I’ve had water ingress through here and then running down the inside of the boot to multiple areas inside.

Have you removed / added anything recently around the boot area?

Update:

Spent 2hrs trying to find the source of the water leak today. The left hand foam around the suspension mount is soaked through. Removed the carpet from the left hand cubby hole and the centre main part. Both were like lakes.

Removed all the water I could I dried it off as best as I could then sprayed water on the rear section of the car.

Water appears to be coming from the upper carpet bit, top left corner as shown in the picture. I think it's coming down the roof lining and down the metal bulkhead. But the carpet further up isn't wet.. only that part in the pic..

So thoroughly confused right now.

I tried the tail light seals and the vents and couldn't get any water through them. Also isn't the roof drains or boot seals or 3rd brake light

I’d be rechecking the roof drains first. They may have been fine 4 months ago, but leaves etc....

Checked those today too. Have removed the rubber grommets and checked that they were clear today. All is good and can see water running through easily

Water can be a bugger to track back. I've had water in the boot from the rear lights, on a previous car. Also had water in the passenger foot well from a duff seal on the divers side of the rear window on my primira saloon. It was flowing through the roof lining to the front passenger door, then down from there. Had the interior out and sat in it in a storm to find that one. Moral is, keep hunting, it's getting in somewhere and you will find it eventually.
