Water ingress e89

Battling the same issue here. Think my problem is the nearside light when has water in, and the plastic tool container on the left was full of water. I've removed that container and a small amount was also under that box. The seal that sits as part of the light gasket was completely unseated when I removed it so hopeful that a new light seal will solve this.

Is there a way to take the lense off the light unit, I have mold in the bottom, the indicator section, and can't see how I can get at it?

Not possible to remove lens as far as Iโ€™m aware, most people buy a replacement light when they canโ€™t stand the mossy look any longer :(

Yeah thanks. I think I'm there already as having reassembled the indicator isn't working. Think I broke it :headbang: :headbang:

When I had both the side cleared I noticed there are rubber grommets in both of them, the cubby hole (passenger) side had a normal one which when removed looks like it has a heat shield underneath and the Drivers side one that looks like its inserted from underneath, so I am thinking of going back in and removing one or both and also the one under the battery ..like i have said before installing a boat bilge pump might be easier in the long run :)

Wonder if you could pour some Mould and Mildew in and swill it around then some distilled water to clean it out after ? Perhaps someone who has broken theirs could experiment for the greater good 8)

This is the passenger side you're talking about Ric, two grommets here. I've left them in as really hope to have fixed the leak. Look how badly the seal has been seated on mine!

Whats funny is there is no sign of rust at all on an 12 year old car. As I've only had it since September, and the lights were clean as a whistle because I checked for this fault, it must have been garaged by previous owner.

Ive ordered a new light unit so anyone is welcome to the old one if they want to try and discover a way to clean it!
(Indicator doesnt work.)

Anyone know what size grommet I need to buy to seal up one of the mounting holes (ive read only 2 of the 3 holes are used with the newer light unit).

Hi gents, I also have a leak (2014 car which should have had an update on vents) which I guess is the vents. However not much of a tech person, so even struggle to get to the water in the driverside boot with the control modules. Got the fabric trims out but cannot manoeuvre the plastic trim out that is on the driver side protecting the tail light, as if is hooked on the steel frame bit... very grateful if you could help๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The roof doesnโ€™t open (windows down but does not unlatch) so fear for the control unit that has gone...

Thanks

Hi mate, I think the plastic panel you describe will only come out when the boot lid is raised from the front, so you need the roof mech working. Probably need to get any codes read to start with

You are probably right on the plastic plate, bugger.

Did look at the grommet but for mine it is completely fixed.

I have put both my roof module and the other black box in plastic bags to try and protect it from the water coming from below up to press they are both ok

Oh god yes, have you seen how nice their showrooms are? Where abouts are you, suggest you need to find an independent specialist who knows what they're doing.

So my replacement light has finally arrived and fitted it today. If you read the previous I fitted a new light seal to fix a water leak and on opening the boot today bit gutted to find the tool cubby has water in again.

I have only just realised that you have to pull the light seal inside the aperture and tight against the body work. I feel quite the plonker but having read loads of threads on this I just haven't picked up on the need to seat it so accurately..

I've now got the seal fitted perfectly so hoping for a dry boot. Given the amount of water coming in previously I reckon the old light was just pressed into the body and bolted on, as I did with the new seal. I also checked the driver side and it is is fine, and it should be as I've had no problems there.

Given the amount of wet boots leading to flooded roof motors I wonder if there are others whose light seals are not seated correctly? I have some pics if it will help anyone

I fitted some new rear lights and one seated the double seal lip correctly but the other side took some silicone spray and trim tool to persuade it to nest perfectly

Here on the two apertures, the left is seated correctly, the right side is just pushed in. The screwdriver shows the lip you should have over the metal.
Important not to tighten the nuts until its seated correctly.

Similar issue here. 6 weeks ago my roof stopped operating - I'd noticed water below the battery with the foam cradle completely soaked. Lots of condensation in the boot too. I dried it all out as best as I could.

I've now had the roof repaired and the technician said it's as dry as a bone in there. I'm not sure if it's due to a lack of rain, not washing the car or not driving in the rain (haven't driven it at all in the last 6 weeks).

Anyhow, I've ordered a set of boot vents and tail lamp seals. Hoping this will resolve my issue? Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Appreciate any input, no matter how big or small.๐Ÿ‘

Ive now fitted the blanking grommet to the hole left by the new light unit, which uses one less male thread.
12mm is the size you need, very tight to fit but thats what you want. Found on the auction site for a couple of quid for two.

This is SUPER useful, thank you. I'm changing the boot vents and rear lamp seals today. I'll take a look at the top seal too. Many thanks!
