water in trunk

i had posted this a little while ago and i thought i had figured out the problem. but i was wrong.

i was getting water in my trunk on both the right and left sides where it bellows. i decided to clean the drains and open the hole bigger for the drain plug.

washed my car a few times, had some rain and the trunk stayed dry.

today we had some bad rain and i have a small puddle on the right side of my trunk again. left side is dry.

where can this water be coming from? i can fell my hand up the strut tower and it is wet but i have no idea where the water is coming in from? any ideas?

make sure the tail light clusters are sitting flush with the channel on each side. I had a small gap which allowed water to flow into the trunk.I pushed the fittings 'home' and have had no leaks since. I'd go out and take a pic of what i mean but the car is covered in snow!!!

thanks for the idea but i dont think the tailights are the issue.

well i was wrong. the left side leaked also, but not nearly as bad.

i have a question, should the top (when up) be resting flush against the weather stripping underneath the rear glass?

I notice it rests flush more where it curves around but not underneath the rear glass. could this be causing the leak or are all z4's like that?

I'm still in the "trying to figure out why there was water in the trunk" mode too. Had it to the dealer and of course they didn't have the problem. The other day I drove in a heavy rain and no water found. I DO HAVE A THEORY as far as my situation.
I do notice on each side there is a "catch pan" type of thing where the water is actually supposed to drain from the roof into these. They almost act like a funnel since they taper into a drain type hole.
The first and only time I found water in the trunk there was a condition involved. The car was in a rain and it was backed in a parking spot that was at a fairly steep angle. The rear was down and the front was up. My thought is that the rain must have been fairly substantial and the drain wasn't draining as fast as it needed to. The water backed up into these "catch pans" and overflowed rearward because of the angle. You can see at the rear of these catch pans there are slotted openings. I think that's where the water exited into the trunk. Just a theory :? I know the dealer thinks it never happened :x . I'm still experimenting.

lol i like the theory CYCLONE2

funny that you say that because the car is parked the same way as you mentioned in your theory. but i actually cleaned out those drains and even cut the hole bigger for the drain plug to make sure it does not get clogged. to double check, i checked today to see if the drains were clogged and they were both absolutely clear.

im still on the idea that maybe the top isnt resting against the weather stripping and thats where water is getting in. im actually thinking of getting some kind of rubber insulation (similar to the type on the bottom of a garage door) and sticking it on the weather stripping to make the top sit flush all the way around. then ill see if water gets in and if not then ill assume thats the problem.

if not, then i wont be one happy person lol
