Water / dampness in the passenger carpets

Hi all,

Was looking for some info, basically I'm getting water in the passenger side which I attribute to a door membrane. Fingers crossed this sorts out the leak. In the mean time what is the damage the water can cause? I know there are cables that route down the carpet to the seats but are there any modules? Or anything else? I know theres a module in the centre console for the airbag but that's not in the footwell... any other modules?

Basically could the water / damp carpet cause something to fail? It's not a monsoon down there, but worried if the water will cause some problems in the near (or distant) future?

Apart from the obvious potential for corrosion if it’s salty water that’s been kicked up from the road there is also the passenger occupancy sensor down there.

I’m currently waiting for a suitable opportunity to tackle it but with work, the weather and more critically, waiting for the bleeding wiper pull-tool I ordered from Amazon weeks ago to arrive, progress has been a bit slow.

I’ve cleared the roof drains, repaired and replaced the door membranes and have convinced myself that it’s a buildup of debris within the windscreen cowl/scuttle.
It could also be the windscreen trim and if the scuttle fix fails that will be next on the list t do.

To mitigate any further ingress while waiting I’m using a Stormforce cover and have stuffed a couple of towels under the carpet and replaced regularly to soak up the remaining moisture and so far it’s stemmed the issue.

Hoping to get back to it sometime in the coming weeks....

Hi mate, thanks for your post. I'm 99% it's just rainwater as I know the membrane is damaged, so attribute it to just normal water...

there is also the passenger occupancy sensor down there.

This is interesting, I thought the sensor is tied up to the underside of the seat? It's the little black box? i.e. sufficiently high enough to not get damp or wet. I certainly didn't think anything rested on the floor? I guess I'll have to check...

Good move to check the scuttle drains, centre one and one either side, pulled mine out after finding it blocked by poking a finger up it by reaching around the back of the engine. Well blocked so much so that poking it made it dissappear into the scuttle necesitating removing the wipers and taking the scuttle cover off. Tip mark the rest position of the wiper blades with some tape on the glass so they go back in the same place.
Also worth lifting the wiper motor and the linkages out, turning it upside down remove the 6 bolts from the cover plate and clean the grease off the contact plate inside. Grease migrates and contaminates this plate causing wiper parking issues. Two nuts ho;d the whole gubbins in the scuttle and its easy to take out and put back in. Just disconnect the power lead before lifting it out. Poke a flexible rod down the side drains then check with water to see if they are clear.

A problem area is just below the door seal towards the b post. There is an airbag satellite unit in the most crap place ever and mine suffered from water ingress. Expensive unit new and added cost to programme. The unit is not easily programmable to the car, in the end I had to buy a new one and ask the dealer to code in. Believe it was about £500 at the time.

Thanks for this, where exactly is the module? I assume somewhere inside just where the door closes? And very close to the bottom/internal floor?

No chance of relocating higher? Or does it sit in a recess?
