Water companies estimates

They estimated the consumption last year, and made an assumption so high that they sent a letter that I was using too much:

So now the next 6 months are up and they did an actual reading, now they are saying I am using too litle

Interesting that they put such a high estimate in though as now I am £800 in credit.

Oh - and try calling that number

£800 in credit for water? Are you mental?
That's around 180,000 litres or 40,000 gallons of H20 you have paid for and not used. Takes us nearly 5 years to use that much! :o

Surely you have a smart water meter so no estimates required?

I was always against having a meter and was paying 77 quid a month based on the water companys estimate and never thought anything of it until I was chatting to a neighbour who has a meter and was paying 18 a month and then the penny dropped. Got a meter installed and now pay 20 quid a month and no faffing having the meter read or sending in readings :)

Tim.

I have a meter yes, but not smart (not sure where they would get the power from as the meter is in the middle of woods  ). Last year, the water meter reader could not find the meter and rang the bell but after I pointed roughly where I thought it was, I think he gave up estimated something by the looks of it.

It is funny that they look into this considering we have had a water leak in the road for at least 20 years

How much is your bill then as mine is normally about £250 per 6 months, we don’t have sewage so pure water only

Makes it worse, as if you have mains sewage the cost of your bill is exactly double, because the lazy water boards presume that every litre you use is flushed away for them to treat (which is wrong).

My last house (2019) was water only (private sewage) and I was paying around £45 a quarter, so £180 a year. That was metered (same as you, they could never find the meter even though they installed it while we were there), so that was actual usage.

We are now on mains drainage and I pay my bill quarterly which is normally around £100 or £400 P/A. So with price rises and drainage that is correct.

We have a five bed house, with five WCs, three mains pressure showers and dual flush bogs. In Summer we water the outdoor plants every day. There are three people residing (but one is 18 so uses more water than the rest of us).

Seems very cheap though, I know I have the cars but even so, only two of us here most of the time and we don’t even drink the water as it is disgusting. We have a filtering system to deal with the impurities as otherwise the showers and all pipes get wrecked

Sounds like you may have a leak downstream of the meter. If it is inside your boundary it is your responsibility.

Easy to spot as water pipes are not laid very deep in the UK (around 300mm). Look for areas of lush grass or weed growth.

Mine is £20 a month on an old style meter without sewage, so £240 for 12 months, 3 people here and we water the garden every day when required, wash 3 cars most weeks.

3 bed with a granny flat which has a wet room so £250 seems expensive

The giveaway might be the meter being in the middle of a forest :o

We are on a meter 4 bed house only two of us here, it’s normally £180 every six months
