Water collecting in boot

Morning Folks

Can anyone shed any ideas on how to prevent this?

In the boot on left, rain is collecting in the compartment under a flap - no idea what the plastic housing is designed to be used for, other than collecting water.

Rest of boot seems dry, and rubber seals around the boot opening seem fine and have not perished.

Appreciate anyone who has experienced this and has a fix.

Cheers

Almost definitely its the sealant under the top rubber trim that has perished/gone brittle. Lots of threads on here about it.

Clarker may be right but when i had it in my car it was coming from the rear light cluster.. if you have had replacement rear lights at some point ( most have, the originals were leaky as f**k) the new cluster only had 2 bolts instead of 3 iirc, leaving a small hole leading into that area, its something you will notice if you get access to that area.. a bit of time stripping out that area to expose the rear light cluster and a dousing of silicone sealant around the hole and mine is now dry as a bone

I don't agree.
That is not the source, the overflow is only a consequence.

In that case, the leakage should be found in another area of the boot, not in this storage compartment.

I don't doubt your knowledge Robbi but this was the only wet area I had and it's been dry since I sealed the hole

I got boot wetness, only when I parked the car nose up.
I always park either on the level or nose facing down hill.
Works every time for me.

Of course, that is correct.
But if these light clusters are still original, that can't be the source. 8)

In many cases the drainage holes above the tail lights are clogged. In heavy rain, the water then runs over the seals at the top with the above documented result.
For cleaning the drainage holes, the lights must be dismantled and then correctly reinserted. Keep care about the exact repositioning of the big black seals on the light clusters inside of the car.

I've had 2 E89's and both had the same problem with the top seal gone... water dripping in over the side of the seal on top of the cubby hole was the cause.

if its not wet there then yes, I agree, the lights are your next most likely culprit (which I've also had too.., but it didn't end up in the cubby hole in my case) best to remove the trim in the boot and observe where the water comes in, but it can be weather and incline dependent...IMHO.

This happens only, if the drains behind the light clusters are clogged. The seals are not the source of this issue.

I had the same leak in mine, cleaned and re sealed the top boot seal and not had a problem since, and that was 2 years ago.

Thanks, appreciate that. Line of enquiry to pursue.

I park it on the level - on the drive

Cheers Robbi, it looks like a dismantling of the near side rear light cluster is in order… to clear the drainage holes and have a butchers if any further silicon is needed if lights have been replaced.
