The problem with a chamois is that there is no pile in it, so any grit that you wipe onto it stays on the surface and can cause scratches. There only bad if you don't keep it clean. There only as bad as a micro-fibre clothe or your sponge etc would be if dropped on the floor.
If you keep your stuff clean and rinse everything before using it you have no worries
