Ok,

Decided I want a decent everyday watch..

Don't want flashy, and have pretty much decided on an Omega Seamaster in 44mm size..

Have been looking for a couple of weeks, and have my eye on a 12 year old Seamaster Regatta Racing Chronograph Automatic Watch - 2569.52.00

Questions for the "watchaholics"

Should I be worried that it's 12 years old?
Looks in good condition to me - APART from the fact it looks like someone has had the back off it and used the wrong tool, something I would think a "proper" dealer servicing it would not do?

Thoughts on value? Yes I know that's the $1000 question..

It looks a lovely watch. I started collecting watches last year. I'm not really into spending a lot of money on expensive brands but there are plenty of watches that are homages to more expensive brands. If you are looking at divers watches I'd recommend the Seiko Sea Urchin which is a homage to the Rolex Submariner and your choice. You can pick them up for £100 at the moment which is fantastic value. Also for something more unusual have a look at Vostok Amphibias - massive choice of styles and very robust watches (old skool Soviet style)

Mike, if you're serious about the watch, get it checked by a watchmaker - could save you big hassles and big $$ down the line if anythings been swapped out/replaced that shouldn't be, and for an assessment of the condition of the watch. If it's been opened by amateurs it may have water damage on the movement from a poorly seated o-ring under the caseback.
If it's an auction site, do your due diligence on the seller - what's their feedback like? Returns policy? etc. Probably telling you how to suck eggs with auction sites, but never hurts to say it again.
Fact it's 12 yrs old won't make too much difference if it's been well serviced and looked after - just like any car you'd be looking at.
If you're after a solid Omega diver, without the chronograph/timer bits or skeleton hands (which I'm not really a fan of), have you looked at the 2264.50? Very popular for a good reason. There's also a stunning white dial version but can't remember the model number - definitely worth looking at.

And yes, I am still after a Seamaster, but for the money, that Seiko looks the business, and gets great reviews..

Take it to a proper watch maker..check the movement and functions...check prices comparison on chrono24.com
 
Very good choice, Seiko virtually indestructive and totally reliable, mine is over 15 years old and the wife's more like 30+ years.
Only problem has been to replace the clasp

It is! I find I wear it more often than my other watches and the lume is very effective too. I'm trying to resist the urge to add more watches to my collection (15 and counting :o ) so might ignore this thread!

That's good to know - had mine for 18 months now and its been faultless. The mechanism in the Sea Urchin is a tried and tested one.
 
Ok, more questions...

Torn between a Seamaster and a Planet Ocean... Plus I can't seem to get a definitive answer to the differences between the "professional" and non professional models??

I order one of these as well (Seiko)

I don't really have a "good" watch and some people may think that I still don't but that looked like a real bargain to me.

I am looking forward to it arriving as well. 8)

Just read a couple of reviews for the Sea Urchin. Great looking watch, but without a screw down crown, and 100m rating, I'd be wary of any water duty beyond the occasional dunk. Still, did read that other owners have swum with theirs, so maybe I'm just being overly cautious.
Wouldn't stop me picking one up at that price though - please post up pics when it arrives :thumbsup:
