Watchdog has got on the case now

We may just have to be patient. As long as they do get around to do it in a reasonable period of time I'll wait.

Just spoken to BMW UK Customer Services - GOOD NEWS!!!

BMW will be calling ALL '09 to '11 plates (starting with X5 & X6) for a software update. They recon we should be contacted by either the UK office or your local garage within the next 8 weeks.

I wonder what they are doing for pre 09 cars, next door have a 6series on a 57plate, he has the same key as me and the same issues afaik

Can the tracker in the stolen car be manually activated by security company? I had heard that if the vehicle is in the container or parked indoor, it cannot be tracked.

the tracker signals don't go through metal...same as GPS generally doesn't work inside you need line of site to the sky for gps...non GPS tracking uses radio waves afaik and again I think metal screws it up

Personally if my car gets taken by some scrote I'd rather not see it again, hence me not being interested in a tracker. Car would never feel the same again to me...

Just spoke to customer services (couldnt get through yesterday/got fed up of trying) and got the standard eight week trial then you will be contacted and she took contact details so wait and see I guess , have made a note to contact them again in ten weeks
Still not quite sure how dealers are going to deal with 1000's of cars at once

Maybe there's some third party equipment available online so that independant garages can fix it too... :P

The patch will only render the existing devices incompatible.

All thats required is new software to perform the same process again againt a newer version.

Even if it means restoring the cars firmware to an older version before the attach takes place.

The only solution is to either physically protect the port or require authentication of the connected user.

BMW seems to be engaged in security through obscurity.

Not seen any news on this on bmw.nl :?

Can you get to the ODB port on a left hand drive car without triggering the alarm?

Hm no idea, but I think it is not that easy.
I understand (from the e90post forum) that there's not the same alarm blackspot on LHD drive cars as there is on RHD, so apparently it's more likely to have the alarm triggered if you smashed the window and reached into the car.

I gather that the device the thieves use costs in the region of £6.5k so its not available to your average joy rider!

I'm sure the eventual "fix" by BMW will be a properly engineered solution - If post Sept 11 cars are secure then it must be a distinct possibility to secure the pre Sept 11 cars.

The devices can be bough for a few hundred.

I've been given duff info! :x

Now I am a little more concerned - I'll make sure its locked up in the alarmed garage at night while waiting of the "Fix"

Just google it.

Ebay has some of the lower end ones for older firmware at £150 while the "latest update" versions are going for around £550....

E85 effected?

The EWS for the e85 has been cracked for some time. But a thief would have to pick or punch the mechanical lock as well as a program a key.

Why go to all that trouble for an e85, when they can take a newer BMW more easily.

Anyone else with Swiftcover or AXA get this email ?

You may have seen in the news recently that some BMW car models are unfortunately affected by a security flaw. As a customer and owner of a BMW we wanted to make you aware of this so you can take the necessary precautions and help prevent thefts of BMWs.

BMW has advised that the security breach only affects models which were built from 2006 to September 2011.

The security flaw lies with the electronic key. A device now exists which enables its user to access a car's on-board computer and program a blank key. In the wrong hands, a thief can steal a BMW in just a few minutes using the device.

How you can reduce the threat of car theft:

BMW has announced that they will offer a free upgrade of security features for cars affected. Therefore we would recommend that you contact your BMW service department or your nearest BMW dealer who will be able to advise you further.

Visit the BMW website to find out more.

I reckon that raises the stakes slightly. If you don't get this upgrade done, and your car is nicked, insurance company will attempt to lower payout value. I reckon it should be a full and official recall, what if you're one of those (and there's plenty I'm sure) that don't frequent internet forums, watch Watchdog, or read the Mail ?

Yours sincerely

Spoke with the dealers this morning. Only X5 & X6 are being upgraded currently, it is expected that all other models will be included in the next 6 - 8 weeks.
I haven't had an insurance letter as yet.
