With all the threads recently, looking at a new watch, absolutely clueless about the nicer brands so....

Budget is 1000, any suggestions?

Have a look at the Christopher Ward range ..

http://www.christopherward.co.uk/watches/view-all-watches/trident-collection/c60-42-auto-svkk-s.html#

These are the divers but they do Aviation and Motorsport - better still visit them at their showroom in Maidenhead - you need an appointment but they are very helpfull. I'm a big fan and I think the trident compares well with the Seamaster 300m although the trident is chunkier .

Other option is buy vintage . steinhart is another well respected automatic brand which us in the sub 1k market.

Good man! Is it just the one watch you are after? And what sort of style do you like?

@ZermattV - I like those Chr Ward's, I like the motoring C70.

Yep they have a nice range I just wished more if the C7 range were Autos- I have a C700 which is a great watch with the 7750 movement found in a lot of a motoring inspired Chronos- Chopard for instance.

But the Carbon Face is not to everyone's taste. CW are moving up upmarket with some of their current watches as well with some pricing where Bremont were a few years ago.

Go for a used one. £1,000 doesn't go that far anymore, unfortunately. So would get a good vintage omega, or brietling for that kind of money.

First watch £1k , choice is immense & others on here are far more clued up than i but id find a Tag i liked for that money & be very happy with it . http://www.amazon.co.uk/TAG-Heuer-WAU111A-BA0858-Formula-Grande/dp/B007R6CWQA/ref=pd_sbs_241_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1EW9E5HCBRWHDWW2SCRP&dpSrc=sims&dpST=_AC_UL320_SR196%2C320_

Lots of choice either new on the F1 range or look through the watchfinder website to get a higher model used for your budget http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/

Bit over the budget but i love this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/TAG-HEUER-CAU1115-BA0869-GENTS-CHRONOGRAPH/dp/B007W1104A/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1441437037&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=gents+Tag+heure

Thanks for the suggestions, shall have a browse over them now.

I quite like the skeleton style watches where you can see the internals also :)

Only looking for the one @DumfriesDik

As said choice is enormous and whether you wish to go with a Quartz or mechanical. I can second Steinhart and they seem well respected on watch forums and are good value for a decent merchanical watch which is well finished. Also consider whether you plan on keeping the watch or may sell or trade in for a higher end watch in a few years time. If the latter then Tags aren't the best in this respect although obviously you will lose less if you go for secondhand in the first place. I've found it very hard selling mint tags and getting anything like a decent return on them privately. Tags also seem to get mixed comments on the watch forums as they can be seen more of a fashion watch than a serious brand, personally I love them. If you do go secondhand be wary who you buy from, I can vouch for watchfinder having just bought a Tag Monaco Gulf from them last week and their service was exemplorary. Alkso consider Blowers who are well respected in watch circles.

Personally would steer clear buying secondhand privately unless you can view the watch in person.

I currently like the Steinhart Racetimer in the blue or brown and is on my list lol.

Don't buy a Tag brand new unless you plan on keeping it for a long, long time.

We need more of a criteria before we can advise. Auto/mechanical or Quartz? Chrono or non Chrono? Leather or bracelet. Fashion brand or proper decent brand? If I was spending £1000 I'd buy second hand every time. Far much more choice for the money. I'd be looking for an Omega Seamaster or a Tudor of some variation.

Have you considered any German brands, such as Tourby or Damasko? Both very different & both very good.
Stowa & Archimedes are also worth a look.
As mentioned be very careful buying second hand, know would your looking for & be prepared to wait for the right deal, bit like buying a car really.

Not really considered any brands in particular as not that experienced with the nicer watches.

I would prefer a mechanical one, maybe skeleton as I like seeing the internals.

Maybe have a look at the Oris Artelier skeleton. You could just about get one for £1k if you don't mind buying online

Hamilton are a nice brand, I have this one: http://www.watchesyoucanafford.com/hamilton-jazzmaster-open-heart-review/

It's nice to see the movement. You can pick them up over here for £600ish.

Else, as said above, go second hand. Tudor or Breitling would be my choice

Mister T, I actually really do like that one, specially when you change it to the model that has the metal link strap rather than the leather one. For some reason just never been a fan of the leather straps as much.

Personally I don't know much about the Oris brand though, or many of the others mentioned in this thread at that point...

Pretty much everything in that price bracket will have the same internals, so all that really matters is how you like the style.

Ah okay, well at the moment I would say that Oris is the front-runner.

Been looking at the pictures of leather vs bracelet again and I am swaying as to which I prefer now ahah.
