Watch out for that child

Driving down a fairly snowy road through a traffic island, kid about 5 or 6 steps out right in front of my car. I slam on and instinctively swerve to the side to miss him.

End result is I miss the kid by literally fucking inches, but in doing so clip the kerb of the traffic island and scuff my bumper :(

Here's the end result

Not quite at the stage where I wish I'd just ran him over instead. But bloody close to it :(

Ouch, but so much better than picking bits of child out of your car and the mental trauma that would entail. You did a good thing. Did you stop and exchange pleasantries with the parents? Personally if that had been one of my children I'd have been apologising profusely and paying for your repair...

Ditto ouch, but you were certainly better getting the kerb rather than child, I feel your pain & I hope you get it sorted as cost effective as possible.

ouch, i hope you said a few 'kind' words to the parent of said child.

a kid did the same to me when i had a puma a couple years ago. unsure how i didn't hit him as he fell over and i couldn't see him :o the woman (a black african lady) didn't give a crap. i couldn't believe it.

To be fair the parent screamed at the child and apologies profusely, at the time I sort of knew I'd clipped the kerb but thought it was with the wheel so didn't get out to check, only saw the damage when I got home :(

Any idea what the fix cost and method will likely be?

a smart repairer should be able to fix that (although quality of work does vary).

i had similar damage repaired for £70.

I bet your heart was racing, shame about the damage to your bumper but in the scheme of thing it could have been much worse :(

Hope you can get the repair done at sensible money

a child once ran into the side of my car, cost me £25 for the ambulance, fortunately he was ok

Glad that your driving skills were up to the task! Ther alternative would have been a much different outcome.
Sorry about the damage, but it can be repaired, and you'll have a (not terrible) story to tell.

Cheers all.

Indeed, as much as I joke about it, i can't even begin to think how i'd feel if i'd hit the child, even just a little bump.

Cars going into the garage (Batemans BMW) on monday to get the window regulator repaired, and they're going to repair the bumper for an extra £70 so at least it'll be sorted nice and quickly :D

Not sure how this works in the UK, but in Belgium families normally have a "family insurance" that should cover this. If you are talking about a small child, normally parents are responsible for him and should cover the damages to your car? If at least you have their info...?

In any case, your car insurer should be able to provide detailed advice on this for free (by "free" I mean: that is what you pay thousands of pounds for each year).

Don't have the parents info, at the time i didn't actually realise i'd done the damage, so just accepted a profuse apology and drove on.

Idiot, i know :(

Update:

Had her in the dealers on Monday (BMW Batemans) who fixed my window regulator and also did the smart repair for £62 - bang up job, good as new:
