Bought a nice Swiss auto (Kadloo) ETA 2824-2 from one of the forums members. Also ordered a German made STOWA Ikarus ETA 2801 hand wound mechanical Flieger watch. http://www.stowa.de/lshop,showdetail,136139350925093,en,1361393512-25113,flieger,ikarus,6,Tshowrub--flieger,.htm

That watch was the original pilots watch issued to the Luftwaffe in WWII. When I went to the STOWA factory last month I saw it on display in their museum. The thing is huge at 55MM and was meant to be strapped on the outside of one's flight jacket sleeve NOT ON A BARE ARM. Thankfully STOWA hasn't gone down the fashionista fad route of clocks being removed from the wall and adding a leather strap to it like most other manufacturers do these days. The biggest STOWA is 42MM.

The Ikarus that I ordered is a bit of a marmite watch. It looks much much better in person. The Rhodium dial just doesn't photograph very well. Takes about 3-4 months to get one made. Mine will be ready in Mid May-June.

Very nice

55mm is just huge!! I have a few 42mm watches inc IWC flieger and its about perfect for me. It is large but not "panerai" huge....lol...

I bought and sold high end watches for around 15 years, but dont bother doing it anymore. I was really struggling to make it worth my while, and there are only so many friends, family and acquaintances you can sell too. General public were hard work...lol..

I agree with not getting too involved with the high end collecting, selling, trading. I just wanted a few non quartz entry level luxury watches. I bought the pre-owned Kadloo. Which is a very handsome tool watch and only spent $240 on it. I have the STOWA Ikarus on order. And I'm looking at a pre-owned Muhle Glashutte 29er big. Then stop and just wear them. No collecting or must have grail watch of the month. I look at the 10 grand watches and think :scratchhead: Can they really be worth almost twenty times what I'm paying for the STOWA (530 quid).

I have the same view with cars. I just can't see the value of a 200 grand super car. Great to look at and I'd love to rent one for a day/weekend. But to own. Never.

Carol, simple answer, we need our watches to keep time on you girls when you are deciding what to wear when getting ready to go out! :headbang:

If a man starts to wear 'jewellery' i cringe and start to think of Brian Harvey from east17 or Bobby George that darts player. Necklaces and chains just look stupid and chavvy. But a watch is the only safe zone for a man if he wants to show of.

I like the look of a subtle classy watch, as long as its not covered in diamonds and the size of a small planet i'll appreciate it. They are inevitably an ego thing, but well so are a lot of harmless things in life.

Well if like me you loathe rings or other jewellery on men, a watch is the only way of expressing ones taste in jewellery (oh and it's also of practical use).

So I get the masculine jewellery thing but do men find rings un-masculine then?
I can understand necklaces and bracelets but a nice ring on a man is that too feminine as well?
I've got one watch, a nice Gucci, but I only need one really and I only wear it when I have to.

And what of the huge handbag collection that most ladies have? Shoes? :poke:  For the 55 years I've been around I can count the number of watches I've owned on my hands. I bet one would have to search among ten year old girls to find a female that has owned fewer than ten handbags.

For me and watches. It boils down to this. When I was in the Air Force I had a job where I wasn't allowed to wear a watch or jewelry of any sort. I worked on electronic systems which happened to be attached to a nuclear weapon (minuteman II ICBM). So I've never owned many watches at all. So I just want a few nice watches before I take a dirt nap. I have the following watches. An old luminox quartz ($94) An old pulsar quartz solar ($140). Just bought the Kadloo Swiss mechanical($240) ordered a German made mechanical handwind STOWA ($820). And I'm looking at a pre-owned 29er big Muhle Glashutte German watch ($800) And just sold a TAG quartz. (+$500). So I'm not an over the top rabid spend the pension collector. A good quality watch will last for hundreds of years if you maintain them. And they can then be passed down to other family members as a remembrance of you.

Maybe a little over the top!!

I pity the fool that tells Mr. T he's over the top.

I'm a fan of Mr T. He's done a lot of work over the years trying to keep kids out of trouble.

Some nice watches there, especially the Muhle they are gorgeous and have a good movement.

Over the years i think i have had every "big name" watch go through my hands,i had a wealthy backer who would buy from the continent and then i would sell on commision.

Audermars,Patek Phillipes,Breguet's,Jaeger lecoultre,Vacheron i have sold and worn them all... And more Rolex's than you could shake a stick at. But my favourites have always been IWC....

I am not into jewellery however love my watch like my z4 had tag heuer targa florio, moved to Breitling b2 professional now wearing Breitling super ocean chronograph. My dream watch would be I.W.C. But too many fakes and lots of money for real one!!! :o
