Wasserpumpe ist kaputt

So.. waterpump failure. Overheated and stopped on the side of the road next to a miniature horse tied up to a tree. At least I had entertainment while I waited for the tow...

Any reason to go to the full-metal Pierburg over the OEM VDO or even the Bavarian Autosport versions? Assuming that the BMW part isn't too special to require it.

And besides the pump and thermostat -- any other "while your down there" parts to replace?

I don't know about the N54 engines but Pierburg were the OE fit for N52s.

I found out the hard way that BMW charge over £500 for them, but they can be bought for less than £300 elsewhere.

So if VDO is the OE fitment I'd avoid buying from BMW!

Yes -- anytime there's no direct value to source a BMW branded part... then I'll do so. I was very interested in the difference between all metal Pierburg versus the plastic OEM/BMW -- what problem was that solving if it's the electronics or internal seals that eventually fail to short out the unit? https://www.fcpeuro.com/BMW-parts/Z4/Cooling-System/?year=2011&m=2232&e=180&t=11&b=10&d=788&v=

Additionally.. I'm at 90k miles.. worth replacing all of the hoses? https://vargasturbo.com/product/vtt-billet-silicone-n54-coolant-hose-kit/

Apparently the plastic one cracks where as the metal ones doesn’t, it’s also worth while replacing the short rubber pipe between the pump and the thermostat, I did with mine.

N54?
Yes:
HPFP, two turbos, injectors, coil packs, another HPFP (for next time).............. :poke: :)

Following up - parts on order. I figure to replace a few things as it's going to be opened up, I'll just get rid of any future failures on this 90k mile ride, I'll probably break something as I'm working on it, and I no longer trust old rubbers.... too many kids.

Water Pump - Pierburg 11515A05704
Engine Coolant Thermostat - Wahler 11537549476
ECS Tuning Aluminized Silicone Water Pump Hose V2.0 008286LA01 (U-hose)
Mosselman Billet Oil Thermostat with Hardware & installation kit - OTN54.T85
Replacement Radiator Bleeder Plug - 013197ECS01A
VTT Full Billet/Silicone hose kit - VTT-N54-COOLANT-FULL-BLUE
VTT Billet BMW N54 Crank Seal Guard with N54 Crank Bolt Capture
2x VANOS Solenoid Valve - Pierburg 11367585425
Accessory Belt Tensioner Assembly - 11287563927
Upper Idler Pulley - 11287556251
Continental Accessory Belt - 11287628654
And some replacement bolts and stainless worm drive camps... I'd also picked a billet expansion tank(008378LA02), but it's backordered into Oct.

Sounds like a healthy dose of preemptive maintenance I’m going to do my accessory belt this winter
B21 gave positive reports on the Mosselman oil thermostat and the Pierburg alloy water pump

I appreciate the feedback on that. I'm always conflicted about replacing things that haven't broken (yet). Getting the cooling system, Vanos, and belt out of the risk zone makes sense for the next 60k miles. While this isn't my primary car, if it's a nice day, I want it to work without waiting to be towed home. That being said.... I'm not sure I have B21's approved budget by SWMBO.

Like your ‘cribs’

Nice! I like the height of yours with the larger dimensional lumber.

If I had access to a jack that went higher, I'd probably add another 3"-6". Just getting it up on these was a series of intermediate steps and a chunk of wood between the jack and the Zed.

Yes Ukrainian engineering concept…nothing like a bit of chunky timber

Haven't found the waterpump yet, but I think I'm getting close.

Replaced the oil housing gasket & oil therm (Mosselman)

Depressurized the AC refrigerant thinking it was a radiator screw... ugh.. don't work late at night for this reason. I will have to get that recharged. I have a CSF all-metal radiator coming tomorrow to replace the BMW one since it makes too much plastic unhappy noises when removing hoses.

And first time this intake manifold has been off -- need some walnut blasting... eventually... not this time.

Good work..I'd heard on Spoolstreet that some folks were unhappy with the quality of the CSF rads?
