Washing machine noise?

Hi all,

I recently bought the car of my dreams - an E85 3.0 with 95k miles on it and lots of SH.

Anyway, I expected to spend some money, and the car was a good price, but I'm already identifying a few things such as a slight coolant leak and also an airbag fault - it's booked in with a BMW guy (Wayne Grizzle) if anyone knows him as a local indy?

Regardless, I have noticed this noise (video link below) especially prominent when starting up cold. Sounds like it's coming from the belt at the front of the engine, or near that area.

It's not as noticeable as the engine warms up, but still quite loud to begin with. Performance is unaffected.

Can anyone shed some light on what this could be?

Thank you

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm hoping that's a relatively easy fix, and something I can drive on still until it goes in on Wednesday?

It'd be pretty unfortunate for it to throw the belt in the next few days. I've seen cars sound like this for ages.

Having had another listen it could also be the harmonic damper (aka crank pulley) tearing apart (the inner and outer bits are held together with a rubber web that can tear over time.)

Thanks for the detailed support mate, appreciate it.

I'm basically minded mechanical wise, how severe an issue is this if its the latter?

Driving 400 miles this weekend before it goes in!

Well I'm 150 miles in, its a 200 there then back to Liverpool for the weekend.

Seems absolutely fine, no issues with performance, but taking it easy

I had a harmonic damper rip in half once and it threw the belt onto the inner half of itself and kept going. I pulled off the outer pulley that was hanging on and carried on for about a week until I could get it changed!

Good to see you managed to keep it going for a bit.

I made it to Liverpool, and the EML came on with about 20 miles left. No idea what it is but performance is still perfect. I've not got a reader, and it's a bank holiday weekend...

Only choice is to drive it back with the EML on on Tuesday, then to the garage Wednesday

If it's a red light you could be in trouble and shouldn't drive car any distance. You need to get that code read urgently

From what I glean, these are related to the airbag and MAS.

EML cleared now and stayed off when I drove earlier.

Performance still brilliant, AA guy suggest noise sounded like camshaft, I really don't know - but it's worrying me a fair bit

Please let us know the outcome of these issues, hope you get it sorted soon

Little update for you guys if interested.

Took it to an indy specialist today - really cool guy and has an M54 himself so knows them well.

Said my noise is from a bearing on the water pump - happy days, nothing deeper!

I also have a vacuum leak due to a torn boot near the throttle body - explains the MAS codes and lean mixture as well as sluggish at low RPMs.

Parts ordered and hopefully a good fix. He's doing a full service including spark plugs and even included tranny oil change for free (just cost of oil)

Happy so far! Let's see how it turns out.

New water pump to be fitted then ?

Yep just picked it up from the garage. Showed me the old pump, it was the culprit.

Car feels so good after a full service (insp 2) and a change of gearbox oil. New engine mount and brakes. Finally can relax a bit!

The above Mas codes and lean fuel are down to a split intake boot - parts coming tomorrow.

A very happy Zed owner!
