Hi,

Quick question. I have just assembled my front shocks and I have used all new parts. There is a washer that fits just below the strut and the part number is 31336776760. It looks like plain washer but one side is a bit rounded. I haven't yet taken off the old shocks so I can't compare. Does anyone know if the rounded bit faces the top or the other way. I cannot see from any pictures or diagram.

Thanks

Phoned BMW, they could not confirm for definite but their educated guess is that the rounded edge should be face down.

I did my front shocks with all new parts recently and built them up before taking the old ones off the car. Unfortunately I can't remember which way round it was on the old ones. On the new one I put it as BMW described with the rounded edge facing down towards the spring. This way round seemed to seat much more nicely with the dust protection collar above it and also wont be gouging the upper spring plate due to the sharp edge. Either way round it probably wont make a difference IMO.

Hope this helps.

Thanks TheDan. Just having two people say the same thing helps. The top nuts were just hand tightened so haven't touched on the nylon lock bit. Worth double checking as it doesn't take long.

Btw, did you have to get your tracking looked after after installation? I plan to change the drop links when I get started.

I also changed the control arms, track rods and drop links at the same time, so definitely needed an alignment after that. If I was going to change just the front struts I would probably have still got a front wheel alignment done, just for peace of mind as IIRC front camber adjustment is done via the elongated holes at the top mount.

Top tips for when you change them over btw:
  • Be very careful with the knuckle to shock clamp bolt as there are cases of these snapping when undoing.
  • If you can, get new knuckle to shock clamp bolts, top mount nuts and drop link nuts as I believe they are all intended as one use.
