Was I right to walk away?

Inspection 2 includes the all important valve clearance check.........a VERY important part of M maintenance, but would ( or should ) a prospective purchaser factor in the cost of big end replacement ? ( as preventative maintenance? )

Not quite correct. The Ins2 does not include the Valve Clearance check, or the Gear box Oil change, or the Diff Oil change. They are all optional additions, that can be done independently, at other times, or along with the Inspection, as most of us do. As stated though by 66,000 miles all of these items should have been done. As well a the filters etc that are changed at Ins2. So worth a check to see these items were not done at some other time, before walking. :)

I went to see a Z4M today at my local BMW dealer. An 06 with 66k on it, looked like a great car and they offered me a fair deal on my S2000 as part ex. After reading up on here over the last few weeks, I had familiarised myself with the service regime and knew what to look for in the book.
The running in service was done at 1260 miles ....good
Followed by an oil service and an inspection 1 at a BMW garage aver the next 3 years.
It then had 2 oil services and 2 inspection 1's at independent BMW specialist over the next 8 years, the last being in 2016.
It has never had an inspection 2.
The sales guy assured me that this wasn't a problem as the car had a 12 month warranty.
I walked away, but am now wondering if I've done the right thing.
What are your thoughts please.

What sort of deal where they offering?Get them to do the inspection 2 before you buy off them.See if they will give you the name of the previous owner and try and contact them to get more info on the cars history.

Yeah I'm not so sure that the lack of Inspection 2 is a deal breaker IF they can give a written guarantee that any extended warranties will remain valid AND they will do the inspection 2 before you take delivery.

Transmission and diff oil, air filter and spark plugs are the only main difference between inspection 1 and 2; delaying replacement of these is not going to cause any damage.

Just because the service book says inspection 1 it might have actually had a 2....did the car come with a stack of invoices? I wouldn't be put off, it's probably only due that service about now any way...good deal on yours and a 12 month auc it's pretty risk free for you. I'd say go for it, too much scare mongering on here....the engine, for the most part are as reliable as any Bmw have made!

Kinda agree with Angelus666, great deals are sometimes simply that - great deals. A good trade in price saves you a lot of hassle :)

Heck, that service 2 wouldent have worried me. Like the others have said, if the warranty stands and you get them to do a inspection 2 before you take delivery, done deal mate.

Now if your buying this car to hang onto for a year, I'd say keep on walking.

No inspection 2 would indicate that it's not had the spark plugs, air filter, diff oil or gearbox oil changed.

So assuming they hadn't been done, if you factored in the above 'missing' service items when buying, would it still be a problem?
Or would the cost of doing those make it a much more expensive proposal, and not worth it?

Why not ask them to do an inspection 2 as part of the deal ?

It's got a bmw warranty and isn't gonna go bang tommorow because it's missed a service ..
If you like the car there is a deal to be made

I can just imagine the comments on the sale thread of this car of the OP decided to buy it and then advertise it on here for sale

Not quite sure what you're on about here? Service book clearly states that valve check, gear box and diff oil must be done at Inspection II, they are not 'optional'! Inspection 1 list states only valve check.

If you're buying as a long term prospect I'd say get the service done pre sale and then go for it. The 'missing' service will only be an issue when you try to sell it. If you are keeping long term that becomes less of an issue.

Yep! As has been said, try and factor the Inps 2 into the deal and buy it. AUC = complete peace of mind.

Lots of things in life carry some sort of risk, buying performance cars is just one of them. If we all got scared then none of these cars would ever sell. This one looks to me like carrying minimal risk to you and on top of that you've got a good deal, even better if they chuck the Ins 2 in!

Buy it before they are fetching a few grand more this summer and enjoy these wonderful cars. :driving:

Thanks for all of your advice, it helped me make my decision. I walked from that car but went to see another within the same group. I used the valuation he had given me and then bargained hard.......I am now the proud owner of a 2007 titanium silver, 50k miles Z4M. Perfect service history, all BMW main dealer, inspection 2 done at 40k.

I think its amazing how much knowledge i have gained from this forum. Anything the dealer said I instantly knew if it was right or wrong. To be fair, this dealer was quite good and didn't talk too much bull s**t. He did say one interesting thing when I mentioned I had been on a forum...."bloody forums, they are the bane of my life" :-)

I can't collect until the 25th April as I'm going hols.....its going to be a long month.

Nice move there OP , highly likely the other car would have given no real issues but as you proved other cars are out there so why buy one with fickle history
Welcome to the forum & to the pleasures of the S54 :driving:
