Was going for a drive, now have a problem.

Sun is out and so was gonna make the most of it and go for an early morning drive.
Only had a couple of gallons of fuel left so stopped at Tescos to fill up.
1 mile up the road and the car is misfiring and the engine light has come on and off a few times.
The symptons are identical to what member S08 had here.

My 35iS is lovely ... but has packed up !

1/2 way to coast and a massive misfire. Limp mode. Stopped, restarted and OK until I try to put the car under load then limp mode again.

I have managed to get it home but for such a lovely car I am not having a lot of luck !

Constant speed and not much acceleration no issue. Moderate right foot and misfire again + engine management light.

Ideas ?? I immediately thought HPFP or injectors but what about plug ? Does this have coil packs ?

Have contacted Tesco Customer Services in case there has been any other reported fuel issues,. They contacted the store where I filled up but no other complaints. Got them to take my details and have a customer ref number from them in case BMW suggest the problem is with the fuel.
My Dealers service dept not open today as Bank Holiday so will give them a call in the morning to get it booked in.
I remember Nick(Stark)(previous owner) had similar problems when on his Euro Trip a few years back and think it turned out to be an injector problem.
Hopefully this will be covered by my BMW Warranty although with £250 excess and the Dealers 1hr diagnostic fee this ain't gonna be cheap.

Coil pack, spark plug or injector ! Mine was coil pack quickly fixed. It feels terminal but isn't - not a nice feeling though ... I remember that day well !

They will replace the coil pack and no doubt the plug whilst they are at it. If not that then injectors.

It may be the fuel but I doubt it as no one else has complained.

Ouch! Had to change a few of them on my sisters VW over the years, not cost more than £40 all in but at least it's sorted. Funnily enough my E88 was recalled to have all the coilpacks replaced but they never did the plugs as supposedly they were fine until 80 miles later when they told me they needed replaced for the service :?

Yeah, the audi s3/rs3 & seat leon cupra/r engines from 2002 used to have coil pack issues from new, but easily fixed, annoying all the same.

Looks coil packs can be obtained from about £11 upwards.
Makes you wonder if it would be a good idea to change these at say 50k along with the plugs.
Given me the idea to carry a few spare.

Over heard a BMW service agent tell a customer his car's ignition had been replaced under warranty with £800 worth of coils. Must have been a 24 cylinder job!

Seems a clever idea to bury electric coils so close to the hot engine.

Nice to have a spare just in case.
And the tool that removes the screws holding the plastic cover down.
Seems quite a common part amongst a range of car manufacturers.
