Warranty

So my warranty is due. 2011 20i e89, 65000 miles.

Last year it was about £350...this year? Over £1000!!!!! (both for the top policy with £250 excess. No claims).

Parkers and webuyanycar value it between £6k and £8k!!!!!

I know its an insurance policy, and one claim could pay for itself, but it seems very high - or is there a real chance its gonna break at this age?

It is a real dilemma! There is no straight answer either. I must admit £1000 seems a lot of money and the 2litre is perhaps less complex than something like the 3.5is so on balance I think I would be putting some money aside each month rather than paying such a hefty premium. The premium this year for my 3.5is was under £500 which I think is decent value for money but if it increases at renewal time as much as your’s has I will have to think very hard.

Total up how much the warranty has saved you over the course of having it. If there are any large repairs which have saved you money, then it could be worth it.

If you have made no claims at all, it would suggest your car runs pretty sound, and just keep it properly serviced.

Problem is with logic, its counteracted by sods law, which means the day your policy is inactive, is the day you have catastrophic engine failure!

It's always a difficult choice, but overall warranty providers aim to make money from their product, so if your car has average reliability you ought to be better off not having the warranty.

And £1,000 for a year sounds very expensive. If my car hadn't had any issues I think I'd risk not renewing, cross my fingers and put some money aside just in case then find a good local BMW specialist, but I'd understand why others might think differently.

Good luck whatever you decide.

They are Bookmakers - They set the odds in their favour!
Having said that, I have the BMW insured warranty on both my 335xd and 35is - I pay (from memory) £440 each with a £250/claim excess. They both include BMW assist .

I'd be looking at a different warranty company. Plenty of alternatives out there. £1000 per year with a £250 excess for a vehicle worth circa. £7k
is very expensive.

Haggle hard. First, they'll drop it to just over £500. Then, to well under.

Thanks everyone. Never had to use it on this car but Deb has used hers on her 2014 1’er.

It’s the roof failing that worries me but don’t think I can stretch to over £1k. Never thought about haggling, I’d like to know why it’s such a huge increase so will have to phone them up.

Are there lots of bits that are more likely to break after 60k miles?

Warranty Direct.
I paid £1100 for 3 years complete cover (£100 a month for 11 months, no excess including wear not just failure of components.
Car is 2009 35i with 29K on the clock.
I used Warranty Direct for my 23i, they are prompt, professional, honest and always pay.
