Warranty Work: New starter motor, Oil top up and brake fluid

Hi Guys,

dropped the car off today for warranty work.

I need a new starter motor due to the grinding noise at startup. Sounds horrible sometimes!

Also they stated i need a brake fluid change. So i said fine. However I refused the oil top-up at £22

Top up? How many litres does that equate too? I'm scouring the net atm for the cheapest 5W30 (Castrol edge that is!) i can find...

Tbh i think its a bit of a fallacy as i picked the car up 2 months ago with a full BMW Dealership service. I thought the N54 engine was ok for oil consumption.

A top-up should be less than 1l - but that's 0.1-1l at dealer rates, plus £21.99 'fitting' :P

If you indeed have a 3.0i in your sig (not 3.0si), thats the M54 engine mate. Yeah they do use a little oil sometimes, especially if driven enthusiastically or on short runs.

Id say mine uses around 1 litre every 2500miles. Some would say thats a lot, but it really isnt. Its well worth buying a 5l carton to keep at home for topups - make sure you check the level every 1-2weeks, as once the "Check Oil" light illuminates, its probably getting a little too low!

It does, "roughly" via the oil check button

Where is this oil check button on a 2003 3.0i?

it is called a dipstick on ours :D

you just get a warning light when it thinks its low...
:D whoops!

I was thinking that! I think i'll pick up some 5W30 on the way home.

They also replaced the rusted hydraulic trunk joints under warranty too.

My dealer gave me a oil top up free, and the remainder of the bottle, when it went in for warranty work.

Mind you, it was in there often enough when i first got it.

All sorted now (I hope!) :)
