Warranty question

Hi all,

Just wanting people's opinion please. My Z4 came with a Sytner Select 6 month warranty and I am not sure whether I should pay the £400 to make it to 1 year (i.e., an additional 6 months). It includes breakdown cover and MOT cover.
I have until tomorrow to make a decision and whilst I do like peace of mind, the warranty is pretty pricy and there is no negotiation on the price of it.

I am inclined to say no.

My car has done 50k if that makes any difference.

So I would be interested in people's views please!

Thanks!

Ask yourself a few questions:
How old is the car and what model is it?
What's the service history and MOT history like?
What does the warranty cover - specifically, what are the exclusions (including any excess/limit on claims)?
Would you normally pay for breakdown cover, and at what cost?
How many miles will the car cover in the next year?

With the answers to those, an objective decision can be made. Personally, I'd probably leave it at the 'free' six months and self insure for the next six months. An insured fault would probably present itself in the first six months. And if something came up in the next six months that cost more than £400 to fix (at an indy) then you've been really unlucky.

Presumably it's a facelift car? So there's always the potential water pump - but the £400 should cover that at an indy. And if it's an E85, get the roof motor moved straight away!

you could try warranty direct or some other aftermarket warranty. Get a quote and then wait a month or 2, you will get an email every week and the price will keep falling every week. I'm now on 55k miles and the only problems I have had is to replace two front calipers (£45 each) and had to move the roof motor into the boot (£10) I have just replaced the shocks and added eibachs........been a very cheap two years! Of course no warranty is going to cover shocks and springs, do they cover seized brake calipers or is that a part that is classed as something that wears out?
If I'd have paid for a warranty I would be really out of pcoket but would have piece of mind.

If the car has no problems at this moment and at that mileage ,I would keep the money in the bank.

I have a BMW approved extended warranty for my E89 3.5is and I paid under £500 for a full year. The car is a 2010 model with 40000 miles on the clock. So £400 for 6months looks a bit expensive.i :|

Paid top dollar for a warranty with these people and twice they avoided paying and they should have paid out. Plenty of threads on avoiding payments on the web and if I know now how bad they are , I would have stuck with the manufacturers warranty with my 3 year old Volvo at the time.

I've had my car for just over 4 1/2 years.

In that time I've spent £600 on things that would have been covered by that warranty.

Get the car checked out by a local Indy or get someone that has Carly to check for any faults to see if it's throwing anything up at the moment.

If you get things fixed and do some pro active maintenance it'll be as reliable as any other car.

Budget for £1000 per year getting things sorted as they wear out although I've spent £1350 in 4 1/2 years on non servicing items like bushes, alignment, brakes, door membrane etc.

There's plenty of information in the FAQ about the things that can go wrong....

Springs
Door Membrane
Springs
Roof Motor
Springs
Bushes
Springs
Oil Consumption
Springs
Battery
Springs
Crap Handbrake
Springs
Headlights that are useless in the dark
Springs
Water Pump
Springs
ABS Pump

Also depends if you are handy wielding spanner’s and is it a daily.

I’ve had may car nearly eight years, and other than a battery, ignition switch and recently and abs sensor, there hasn’t been any other issues. All of that I’ve sorted for under £150 myself.

I also replaced the entire ABS pump myself, but that might not have been needed

Thanks everyone, great responses!

Based on that, I think I will leave the warranty and just keep the money in the bank.

Thank you all!
