Warranty opinion

Hi

Having just brought the 3.0 it's an 04 with full service history (no warranty work done as yet) and has done 34k. I was looking on the posts here etc and have looked at after market warranties and they were all around £500 mark. I rang BMW and they have offered me their warranty for £39 per month for the 'comprehensive' cover £100 excess or £29 per month for the 'named components' £100 excess. This seems good to me... what do you guys think?

I am in favour of warranty as my 320d se 05' has just eaten a swirl flap and had to have a whole new engine & turbo (thank god had bmw warranty) so did not have to pay a penny

as always you thoughts are much appreciated.

Just had mine in for a tiny oil leak. I have comprehensive BMW warranty with a £250 excess. Dealer has sorted the leak and told me it was a minor job so 'no charge' ! result :) I'd stick to a BMW warranty if I was you.

BMW warranty seems good at the price offered, for those not able to take up the BMW waranty I hear good things about Tesco's warranty packages from the Porsche boxster/cayman owners.

Go with the BMW one if you can afford it.

If the year goes by without using it, so be it, but it is good piece of mind. I have had a few claims, bonnet reliese cable, wind screen because of rain sensor, rear coil, sat nav (that took a week) set of 108s...

From speaking with someone at work - Porsche owners go for 3rd party warranties a lot because the Porsche extended warranty isn't great. Apparently it doesn't cover a lot of stuff and they use minor changes to the car as excuses to void the whole warranty.

ON that note - I mentioned on another post that this guy had just bought a year old RS60 - it already has an oil leak, common to Porsches's I know - but jees, thats pretty bad.

BMW warranty all the way if you're eligible - I'll be taking the extended one on the Z4 and the 3 series when its time - the swirl flap thing is not something I really want to happen out of warranty (although I think ours is the newer engine without that issue)!

I'd probably take the BMW warranty. The new style warranty is very good value, especially as you can tailor it down to your needs, although I'd be tempted to take the fully-comp as it's only marginally more than the lower-coverage options.

The reading I've done on the matter suggests that the 20d swirl flap issue was fixed by changing the design of the induction chamber (to use plastic spindles monolithic with the flap rather than metal ones). I know a lot of people swap this part to head off in ingestion incident, or else remove the flaps altogether.

The Porsche GB warranty seems to be good provided that you keep the car totally standard, only use OPC's for maintenance, and have sufficient means to pay for it. I know that the anti-modification provisions ruffled a lot of feathers when announced, but I don't think it's unreasonable for Porsche to expect the car to be kept in the manner they intended when they constructed it; how else could they assess the risk of the maintenance liability they're taking on?

Thanks all for you input

I'm going to go for the BMW comp insurance as i think this will cover most things, i hope :D

I had the full cover with no excess without breakdown cover for my E60 (free RAC from Barclays) for £75 per month. I will use BMW Insured Warranty again when the AUC warranty expires in February next year.

bmw one also gives you bmw assist- really helpful when i used them

Does that come with the extended warranty or an additional charge?

Do you need anything installed in your car?
