warranty issue with roof motor

hi
My roof has failed on my z4 2.0 55 plate 24,000 miles The car is still under warranty and Bmw ordered the part. I took it in only to receive a call later telling me that if they find water in the motor its not covered by the warranty and therefor they need my authorization to take the roof off to check it at £400 plus which if its not water will be covered by the warranty if not total cost would be £1200 to me

I asked why it is not covered by the warranty and basically BMW will not cover it if water has got in as its an outside element
What rubbish I told them that the part should be watertight in its location if not why not and how has water got in it must be a design fault. Its seems that they know this and are coping out or trying to because they think it is water in the motor

I also cany find anything in the warranty book or on BMW online where it states that this is not covered in fact the opposite it states in the warranty book it covers all factory fitted mechanical and electrical components It also states its easier to list whats not covered but it doesnt mention the roof motor exception
I'm not taking this lying down so any thoughts would be appreciated

Tricky one, because at £1200 you could have it done less than half price at an independent. My guess is water damage is the most likely cause

Thanks that what I think given the mileage If I get nowhere with BMW I'll take it back and take it to an independant but it sticks in my throat as its still under warranty and Ifeel they're con merchants they fiited the bloody motor and have serviced the car from new and should take the rough with the smooth and fix it!!!

Remind them that the motor design for the roof was changed post face lift due to the poor design of te original!

Sorry but I thought you were aware of that from the endless procession of threads on the issue. It was poorly water-proofed so rusted and failed easily....this was fully addressed by the facelift.

Look for shipkillers excellent thread on removal/replacement and you'll see what the problem was.

Even the face lift ones aren't 100%, as once the water does penetrate it stays wet apparently.

But I'm sure we've only had one registered failure on a facelift car haven't we? Even if I'm 100% out and its 2, thats hundreds less than the old version!!

hundreds less?! that one of those made up statistics :P

Maybe - but it still cost me £900 !!

Its just one of those things :( but everytime i take it out it worth it :D

£1200 is OTT, Barons BMW in Farnborough was £900 all in, back in Jan / Feb as a comparison. 2 Years warranty on the motor ( Which independents are unlikely to offer )

Hi
Just to update anyone who is interested after getting tired of Halliwell Jones contacted Bowker's BMW Blackburn who I bought the car from. Car booked in on the Tuesday and back with me Thursday Roof sorted tickover done rattle gone excellent service
There is they tell me a forum that the dealers go to where problems can be highlighted and resolved mine was a software update for the idle problem and it runs smoothly now and the rattle has gone. I think the car is idling very slightly higher but much better
So it can be sorted!!
With the roof problem for info trading standards offered to take BMW on as they said thet BMW cannot just opt out of the warranty unless it specifically states on your warranty its not covered if its water ingress in the motor. They stated the vehicle has to be fit for purpose and I should have had fair wear and tear use of the roof which one year and 4 months of a bad summer wasn't they said.
In any case didn't need to go down that route as Bowkers were excellent, but there we have it
Thanks again for all the info hope this helps someone
