having seen more than a few threads regarding insured warranties I thought I would recount my experience to date.
Bought my first Z last December with a number of known issues having had it checked out at my local dealers, 93k miles 3.0 roadster '04 registered. being a bit nervous about the mileage I looked around at insured warranties and bought the BMW Comprehensive warranty at £452 (with a£250 excess).
Well it failed the MOT on Monday with a badly leaking offside front suspension strut, had a quote from the local dealer for £365 but they did recommend replacing both at £730. I then sourced a replacement from Bmminiparts and arranged to get it fitted by an independent.
Then i remembered the warranty and again contacted my local dealers. I booked my Z4 in for the front suspension unit replacement and the dealer said that only one would be replaced under the warranty not the pair they had suggested when I first contacted them! OK I thought that’s reasonable (had thought they might try the ‘its fair wear and tear’ get out clause). Booked the car in.
Shortly afterwards I had a phone call from the dealers in which they said they had referred to BMW guidelines and my heart sank – again I thought they would go down the ‘fair wear and tear’ route. Not so they told me that the BMW recommendation is that if the car has done in excess of 80,000 km both shock absorbers on the axle should be replaced. So yesterday got £731 work done just for the excess of £250, dead pleased.
Unfortunately the car will have done over 100k miles when warranty due for renewal and I will only be able to get drive train cover in future.
