Warranties...are they worth it?

Hey all

I am looking at buying a warranty for my Z and was wondering if anyone has any experience of them?

My car is at 65k at the mo and full service history and as far as I can tell all is well.
If you have bought one, which/who did you go for and have you used it? Were they a pain or were they helpful?

The quote I currently have is at £650 for 12 months. Obviously, if I need to get something major done like the head replaced (etc) then it would almost pay for itself if I need to get the whole head changed.

Any info would be great and thanks for reading.

Be careful about what you post in forums, as most warranties will explicitly exclude pre-existing faults.

i've spent about £200 fixing things on my Z4 in the last year (thermostat, expansion tank, coolant, probably a couple other things i forgot).

i personally wouldn't bother. it's a mainstream car with a non-model specific engine so parts can be had cheap.

If your talking about the HVA issue then it's unlikely they would replace the head now. They just seem to replace the HVA's

A complete new head fitted is about £3.5k which i had done under warranty (my old car)

You can see why they are going or a cheaper option.

A warranty must be a personal choice based on your use of the vehicle etc. AND read the small print. Its a bit like car insurance - why go for comprehensive when 3rd Party F and F is cheaper - you assess the risk and make your choice. A low mileage full service history and well maintained vehicle and then I would take the 'risk' and not bother and a Ben G says his minor repairs have reached nowhere near the limit of the total cost of an annual policy. Insurance companies are not charities and so are out to make money for shareholders - just like any other business - so expect any claim to be challenged within the t and c's of the policy.

I would say yes for peace of mind point of view. I had full warranty on my previous 3.0si and found i had enough work done under warranty which far outweighed what I paid for the warranty.

After my 3 year manufacturers warranty was up i got the extended warranty... With 0 excess was £550 pa. i had this for 2 years... In that time all i claimed for was a rear spring!

Last year when i switched bank accounts the account switching service messed up the DD for it so it got cancelled..

Also i'm not sure if the mondial warranty asks for dealer service only... But i've also saved by going to independent garages.

With warranties - its personal choice.

When I bought my zed, I was quoted nearly £1,000 per annum for a full warranty. I didn't take it.

In my two years of zed ownership, I've spent maybe £700 on non servicing related parts and repairs

Wow that is an eye-watering quote.

I've only had my Zed for two months at most and with the window dying I am certainly thankful of the warranty. In the past though I've had car warranties and was unfortunate enough on the three occasions that faults occurred to not be covered. The steering rack was the biggest problem on my E90 (Not covered by AA Warranty), so I've lost faith really. I fully expect to be screwed tomorrow when I go to get the window done but it'd be nice to be surprised.

Still, £700 is a lot to be spending on non-servicing related parts. My last two beemers were reliable so fingers crossed I won't have to spend anything over the next three years.

But a bargain when you compare it to the £2k he otherwise would have spent.

I think a warranty depends hugely on the use of your car and disposable income.

I'd use a Z as a second car so wouldn't get a warranty as repairs wouldn't be hugely urgent. A car being off the road for a month or so, whilst annoying wouldn't prevent me from commuting to work etc.

If say you have the £55 per month to pay the warranty but not much else to spare (including rainy day cash), I'd get the warranty. Reason being, say you have no savings and no potential to save extra cash quickly and your car needs a £400 repair, you'd be waiting 8 months to save the cash for it.

If you have 1-2 years worth of warranty payments in your account already (£650-1300) you already have some buffer so the above consideration is moot.

But essentially, in my opinion, it all comes down to your overall dependence on the vehicle and your potential cash flow.
