Warning Light

Hi All

My runflat warning light has just come on but the tyres look fine, as a new owner am i missing something or is the warning light need looking at??

Thanks

Check the tyre pressures and make sure they're okay, but I suspect that the car had a new tyre(s) or they have been taken off for a wheel refurb and the system wasn't reset... oddly on mine when I had new tyres it took quite a few miles for the alert to come on. Reset and then it was fine.

EDIT to add... if you're running run flats they may appear to be fine when not. Don't know for sure as I've never had an issue with them.

Cheers for that....stupid question but how do i reset the system

Gotta find out what the tyre pressure's are now lol

Start the engine and then hold the RFT button next to the DSC until the light comes on.

Just be a little careful if you have run flats any issues may not be immediately apparent.

Start engine, press button in centre console by roof open/close and heated seat buttons (if you have them) and hold until yellow light comes in in dash. Drive a few miles to reset.

If you have runflats it's not visible if they are flat. I picked up a puncture on Friday and my system kicked in when tyre went down to 22psi and even that wasnt visible.

if you have staggered run flats 255/35/18 and 225/40/18 then pressures are 30psi front and 35psi rear.

cheers guys

yes they are run flats...so its a case of checking the pressure reseting the system then if the light comes on again i have issues

how far are runflats safe to drive on... my comute is 35 miles

Dont drive to fast and get it sorted ASAP

just checked i have 255/35/R 18's on rear and 225 40 r18 on front !!!!

Also how do you know if they are runflats or not??? whats the telling difference if you havent had the car long and not sure what is on there

yep all four have RSC on the wall....so can i run the car with 3 RFT's and one normal one???

Just phoned kwik fit and they said i cant swap RFT for normal tyres bcos the alloys wont take the tyre....is this true??

:!: Dear God no! You shouldn't mix tyres left and right and there was some debate the other week about whether you would actually want to mix pairs front and back! Thankfully though due to the price different between standard tyres and RFTs it's not too great a financial penalty to swap 2 RFTs for 4 normal ones.

If you do want to change you can keep the RFTs to one side in case you need spares or to trade in at a stealer.

You asked further up the thread how far you can drive if the tyre is flat. They should be 50 miles at 50 mph, but remember once you drive on it and distance the tyre is trashed as the sidewall starts to brak down internally. Sometimes thay are repairable depending on where the puncture is and which garage you ask.

Ignore any garage that tells you you can't run normal tyres instead of RFT's. Half the regulars on here are on 'normal' tyres now.

not sure what to do now....what hhappens if you get a puncture if you have normal tyres on....as there is no spare wheel

Run a few searches as this has been covered many times. People carry M motability kits, or Halfords goo, or some spares and jacks. Remember ///M's don't have runflats

additionally, just get RAC cover, i called them when I swapped mine out, they will still come tox/pick you up even if you don't have a spare in the car...

TyreWeld sold in Halfords among others - and even some petrol station. It fits very nicely in the compartment next to the battery and tool kit. It fills and inflates the tyre, in theory, I have never used it. I carry a couple cans to be safe.

Kwik Sh*t don't know their arses from their elbows it would seem. You have wheels that are specially made for RFTs, with a secondary lip (that stops the tyre from coming off when deflated). Such wheels can be fitted with RFTs or non-RFTs. Of course you CANNOT fit RFTs to a wheel that is not thus equipped.

And re the warning light, it doesn't necessarily mean a tyre is flat, just that a pressure dfferential has arisen (hence the need to recalibrate after inflation or tyre change).

I have a verrry slow puncture in one front tyre and the light comes on at a 6psi differential. 8)
