Warning light help?

I've owned my z4 just over two weeks (3.0 auto), and on 3 separate occasions I've had this warning light come on (on its own).
However after turning the engine off, and restarting it seems to start fine, although today it took 3 attempts.

How big a deal is this?

From the owners manual:

The warning lamp lights up. The transmission system is malfunctioning.

Avoid heavy loads.

All of the selector lever positions can continue to be engaged; in the forward drive positions, however, the vehicle will be operating in a restricted gear range only.

Have the system checked immediately.

Maybe oil needs checking? :idunno:

The book says:

"BMW Z4 E89 Roadster automatic transmission cog warning light - if this light illuminates during normal driving conditions it means that the transmission is overheating. Reduce your speed immediately and pull over at a suitable location so that the transmission can cool down again. You can continue your journey, but moderate your speed and exercise due caution. Have the system checked immediately."

Definitely worth having it checked out, hopefully just a sensor problem but letting the gearbox cool and the warning light going off doesn't sound like a faulty sensor. Best of luck.

Here, IMHO, is the clue to a dodgy sensor rather than big money - well, with a bit of luck.

Others on here will hate me for saying this  but,

take her to a dealer for a diagnostic, and if they say it is big money

Get an indie to fix it!

Good Luck

Thanks guys I will run it over to BMW tomorrow, how much does a diagnostic cost usually?

I'll need to see if it's covered on my 3 month warranty (bet it's not!)

This makes me think it might just be a sensor, as it seems to do it when the engine is cold, not when it's hot.

Hopefully anyway :(

Mines been doing this on and off a for a couple of years its normally after the cars been parked and I normally just turn off and restart if you do drive it just stays in one gear my mate is a BMW Tech so whenever he services my Z its at a BMW workshop so she gets plugged in every time and passes with flying colours but he has told me that you can get a lot of false readings but get it checked to be safe

That sounds pretty much spot on, that's a little reassuring! Thanks for replying

Careful. There's a gasket protecting some electronics from transmission fluid. It can leak, the electronics get upset but the transmission can run dry.

Does the car do that when you try to re-start after turning it off after normal driving?

If it is any kind of "drivetrain" warranty it should cover anything that has the transmission malfunction light come on. Maybe now, maybe after a first consultation with a lawyer.

first time it happened the car hadn't been driven for about 4 hours.

Second time it happened it hadn't been driven for about 12 hours (overnight)

Third time (today) it was about an hour after it had been driven... So it's fairly unpredictable!

Dealer says they will diagnose it and lend me a FIAT  in the event they need to keep it, but they're a 3 hour round trip away, I would rather get it diagnosed before I leave but not sure if anywhere will fit me in at the last minute tomorrow morning

You are not suffering from what I'm thinking of then.

There's a brilliant Indy in Basildon who could look at this for you. Try Power Developments, right off the A127.

Not sure entirely in Essex where you are, but the guys there are superb and have serviced my auto gearboxes in the past, so if there is an issue they will know what to do.

Just an idea if you wanted to go local. Personally I would not drive any distance with that light on, it tells you there is an issue with the 'box and you shouldn't risk it.

My brother bought a Porsche 911 off a small dealer - car had issues with exhaust, tyres and some other issues that's were not apparent at the time of sale..

He took the car back and got all the issues resolved on the car..

Not sure if its an option for you?

You could take it to an indi - will be allot cheaper then main dealer for diagnostics..try PMW great service from them in the past for my e60.

Good luck..

Guys I've managed to get an error code using a mates code reader:

P0701- Trans Control Sys Range/Performance OR Fuel Trim Bank (not sure which it is, but code is definitely P0170)

Does this mean anything to anyone??

Is it worth deleting it and seeing if it comes back, or shall I still take it to a garage?

I'm not far from basildon anyway so that would be great! But if it's going to cost I need my dealer to do it as they should cover it.

I had that warning light on every now and then when starting the car. INPA showed low voltage error messages. I then noticed that I can recreate the error by turning ignition on rapidly from sleep to engine start. If, however, I turn ignition only to position 2 (instrument cluster lights up), wait a second or two to allow the self diagnostics to settle and then start the engine, everything's fine. Could be my battery going bad or my retrofitted paddle shift causing resistance, I guess.
