hi to all, after owning a few BMW's with the straight 6 engine, i have noticed my 04 plate 3.0 z4 warms up very quickly....the needle is off the blue after a few minutes of running. ....where as my "older" cars never got upto full temperature after a 5 mile commute to work. i understand how the thermostat works, but is there another system on my engine, i seem to recall something about this fitted to SAAB cars???

Oil temp takes a long time. Water temp will always be far quicker. My oil needs at least 10 minutes for the needle to start moving.

I knew someone would say it so I just went ahead.

No sadly the tyres still not right. Looks like I'm going to have to fork out for a new one. £200 mark on a car I hardly use.

For that matter WBAC is on my mind I use it so little now :(

Guess if you are going to pursue the classic car thing then getting the timing right on selling yours could make a fair difference to value
What size / ref is the tyre ?

The temp gauge will move off the blue within 30 secs and should be over a quarter if you're driving along within 1 or 2 miles. A 3.0 won't heat up properly for about 5 miles of constant driving.

Bear in mind the engine temperature gauge is not linear, so when it first hits halfway it is only at 70 degrees, normal operating temperature is between 92 and 95. I had my car hooked up to INPA and had all of the temperatures mapped to each point on the gauge, so I know what temp it is at each point.

I would say a 5 miles commute will get you to halfway on the needle, but possibly not fully warmed up.

i go off the intravee warm up,

after 7 mins the needles on half way, but stays there, takes about 12-15 mins before digital read out says 95-97, which is where it idles, on steady driving its usually a 99 had odd peak at 102
