Looking for an older car to supplement the fleet and for my daughter to start learning in. Rather then buying an unknown car, perhaps someone knows of a car with the history ... 4 doors a must, Age 2000 onwards or so.

dont have one anymore but i can highly recommend a seat ibiza of the same vintage and its a mix of polo & golf if you cant find what your after, seat's are usually a bit cheap to boot - i personally had a y reg mk3 ibiza, other than o2 sensors when i first got it the car never missed a beat for 3 years, great first car i thought.

pvr, when I saw the title I thought Breaker had broken you with his "real world performance" talk and the ///M was being offloaded :P

Well, as Breaker says - there is hardly anything in the 0 - 30 :D

 Hi PVR,

my wife has mint a 1.4 polo se (not for sale :P ). However, if you do go for a polo be aware that there is a know pedal box issue (they VERY commonly break) leaving no clutch without any warning. #

Therefore no: :driving:

If you buy a used polo, insist that it's changed. Other than that, it's been superb

Search the web to see just how common it is on that era car.

Rgds

Chris.

Thanks for that one, Chris. Striking a balance between what I want and what the insurance company allows for 17 years old are miles apart :D

Just located a nice yellow one with leather for under 3k, will email to see what it is like as it is about 200 miles away!

I am starting to lose the will to live ... have driven hundreds of miles looking at these cars that were described as "immaculate".

Well, if you ignore the dents, broken mirrors, scratches everywhere, water in headlights - then yes, I guess they are immaculate.

Saw an immaculate one yesterday with leather - looked they had a dog fight inside the car by the state of the leather. Ashame, as the outside was actually not too bad (well, ignoring the water in the headlights of cause).

I must be expecting too much I guess.

pvr,how about a golf, had one for two years and not a days bother,my mother
has had polo's for the last 8 years with no problems, german or jap cars, you
cant go wrong,

Why 4 doors for your daughter's car?

Both mine have started in Ka's. The current pride of the fleet is an '02 plate Collection with aircon, alloys, cd player, leather interior and a good main dealer service history, 40k miles for £2k.

Cheap as chips to run and repair (As I've already had cause to do after someone rearranged the rear wing)

Ah, I have an inbred hatred for Ka's, to me they are female handbags and I would not want to be seen dead in :D

The Polo would be used by my wife and myself as well for those "to the bank / shop" type trips for which I really don't like using the X5. As it might be used for some of the school runs, 2 doors would be too much of a pain.

I checked a Golf for insurance, and for Mrs PVR and myself there is not even a £ difference in insurance, however for my daughter / son to drive it, it would add a huge premium. The 1.6 is even uninsurable.

The Polo would only be £300 for my daughter to be a named driver on whilst earning no claim with that, and £800 for my son. Seems to be the cheapest way to earn a year or so no claim prior to buying their own car.

OK - that makes sense.
You think you have problems - my first daughter had a limited edition Ladybird Ka - a true comedy car and as you guess red with vaying size spots stripes, etc.

I'm sure you're aware but if junior is involved in a shunt they may challenge the parent and named driver stuff as it's been acommon wheeze for years for th eparents to insure. All comes down to who really drives it

the missus was looking for a polo and ended up getting an Ibiza, it's a great car, I actually prefer them to Polos

This is all above board with the insurance, told them everything in advance. From our 3 cars, 2 are insured with them already and it will truly be a family used car for all cr*p driving jobs. They can buy their own cars I guess when they have completed university so they will have 4 years no claim before they even buy their own car.

PVR,

how about a Lupo GTI ?(checkout a silver one!). I

- I'd pay the extra insurance myself, just for the cheeky/sexy central twin exhaust pipes... :D

Ibiza is Golf size, so insurance problem ...

nope :driving:

Ibiza is the same VAG platform as a Polo and has been since SEAT joined VAG in the early 1990s, but Ibizas cost less overall and are better looking (imo). 8)

Golfs/Jettas (Audi A3s) are the same platform as the Leon, as said above.

Being based on the same platform, with exactly the same engines etc as a Polo, but costing less the insurance on an Ibiza will actually be lower. The Ibiza is a lot cheaper to maintain and run, and has virtually the same performance and economy (same engines, the only difference would be the weight of the shell and interior), which is why my missus ended up with it. It was a good 2k cheaper than the equivalent Polo and looks more sporty inside and out and doesn't suffer as badly with the VW tax they like to add to parts.

Being 100% honest as I have just had to travel this exact same path in the last 6 months, the Ibiza is a much better option if you need a Polo sized car and want to keep the VAG quality and reliability. Certainly look at some and see what you think, you'll be impressed. We ended up with a 56 plate 1.2L Ibiza, for £4k.

You won't get a 4 door version either, only 3 or 5 ;)

Interesting as the ones on Pistonheads are exactly the same prices as the Polo's. Sounds like you got a very, very good deal.

I'd be very surprised if a like for like Ibiza is the same price as a Polo, have a look on Autotrader to check them out. They are definitely at least worth a sniff if you are looking at Polos. Even if you end up paying the same money the running costs should be noticeably lower for the SEAT.

We did get a good deal, as she bought at exactly the right time (3-4 months ago) and off of a nice school nurse :)

Had a quick look on what is there now, and the prices were almost identical from what I could see.

Mrs PVR chose to have "the real thing" and we have now bought a Black Polo 1.4. Just compiling the list of retro fit items now, so the remote central locking is £27, park control for £36. All good so far :D
