Well I have sold my E24 and put my Scirocco up for sale and am on the hunt for my E86 now.

However I'm very fussy and because these cars are so far and few between, i'm starting my search early.

Must haves:

3.0si Sport Coupe
108 Alloys
Black Exterior - Ruby / Sapphire / Carbon (in that order)
Bi-Colour (Black & Red) interior / Red interior / Amarone Interior (in that order)
Interior trim - Individual Piano Black Or Individual Bi-colour leather
Bluetooth
Multi-Function Steering Wheel
Automatic gearbox
Xenons
Hi-Fi loudspeaker system either the Hi-Fi System (upgraded) / Carver LOGIC7

Less than 50k on the clock unless its very cheap.
Less than £16k spend

Would like to have:

Navigation system - Professional
PDC / Comfort Pack
Heated Seats
Sun Protection Glass
Electric Folding Mirrors
Voice Control
Storage Pack
Tinted Windscreen

If anyone has one they are thinking of selling that fits this bill please let me know or if anyone sees one also please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Good luck with your search. I must say that this looks like a "big" wish list but you may get lucky and find something straightaway.

Ironically I am considering an E24 but I'd like a manual, preferably in 1980s red!!

Thanks I'll keep at it, I walk to work so no rush on buying..

I'll keep my eyes open for you although as E24's go, the manual's are usually in high demand and as such command a large price tag..

You have great taste bluestreak56 as I have almost exactly the car/spec you want – in M form! It's not for sale anyways but when you do find the right car for yourself I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. I do like my black/red bi-colour and piano trim, I think it works well. I have all your 'must haves' although I have the loudspeaker upgrade rather than logic 7, plus heated seats (Xenons standard on an M). Of all the extras I use the heated seats the least: they are indeed 'nice to have' but in reality I use them probably less than 10 times a year and even then it's not as if the heater wouldn't do the job on its own!

Nice 6 series by the way, love the looks of those cars!

Nice to haves:

Not sure about a manual or auto yet having only driven the auto so either is fine for now.

If anyone has one they are thinking of selling that fits this bill please let me know or if anyone sees one also please let me know.

Cheers Markos, very much appreciate your comments. I would love an M but cant afford to run one doing so little mileage..
Sounds like you really do have the spec I want though! Let me know if you see another one although saying that I do need to shift my cars first..

sounds like you want my car - sod off :)

Oh go on Taz, you know its the best one

PS here's a pic of the poor attempt at a black and red leather interior in my scirocco:

Black leather door cards, red / black leather seats, black and red leather gear gaiter, red and black scirocco floor mats, black with red stitching gear knob..

Doing so little mileage is precisely why you CAN afford an M

I do around 5k per year.

+1

+2 - Doing low mileage makes more sense to get an M. Your fuel and servicing costs are already almost half what mine are. I thought my 9,000 miles a year was low!

Plus tyres and brakes need changing less often with lower miles :)

If I had to do say 15k miles a year I'd have a diesel – albeit with some decent grunt  At 10k I'd still have the Z4M though

I'd say I do between 5 and 8k a year.

A high proportion of it will be in town and short distances.

The problem I have is cost and the fact the car will live on the drive.

Here are my running cost calculations (per year): (please feel free to correct any values)

carcosts.jpg

Your calculations seems pretty spot on, to be honest; although are those actual quotes for the car? For me, insurance on a Z4 3.0si Coupe was £800, and the insurance on the Z4M Roadster was £1100.

From that, you can see the main cost differences are tax, fuel and insurance. I am quite financially-minded, so I know where you're coming from; but perhaps you should apply some well known theory - Man Maths.

Man Maths allows you to discount some of those extra running costs, though potentially not all. For those three, you are paying more because you'll be driving a faster, better looking car. I discounted some of mine via this method! (Though not all)

Looking at my Road Trip app with me having driven 3k so far, 6k miles will cost me approximately £1900 (assuming fuel doesn't rocket up). Over 10k your estimate is quite accurate I think. My driving is a mix of longer journeys to the south coast to see friends/family, and town driving (London). My average is 24mpg, but just town driving will get me 16-17mpg.

Maybe you should look for both M and non-M and which ever pops up first go for it!

Very good point. Think more about the type of driving you'll be doing... Town driving ruins the fuel economy, as I've found out. I drive mine on a 18 mile round trip to get to work, and the consumption is suffering because of that - I can only achieve 21-23 so far.

If you're using it as a fun car, I do believe the MPG difference is less.

Obviously there is a price to pay for having an M over non-M, you get more for the money but it depends on what you can afford/justify. Doing low miles makes the cost difference between M and non-M smaller but that still may not be enough to swing things of course.

Both are great looking, rare cars and as long as you're not the sort that HAS to have the top of the range model then the non-M will more than do the trick I'm sure

This. I had a friend who bought the M, because he could not bear to not have the top model, apparently. The 3.0si is an absolutely fantastic car, and in Coupe form, it is absolutely stunning.

IK - Yes those are actually confused.com quotes. Obviously once I get a car then I'd look harder on the quotes.

You're right about the costs, there is one further cost to think about which is the difference in initial investment approximately £3k more expensive to by an M I would approximate..

I know what you mean about Man maths but see below .. :)

Markos - I like you're persuasive tactics ! I think I have to consider some other factors as well though. I'm 26 single and live with my parents for now. Moving forward I would look to get married and buy a house soon and as such I think the 3.0 would suit me better as well as some further factors below..

Coming from the straight 6 3.5 of the E24 (218bhp in 1.5 tons) and the 16v Scirocco (137bhp in 1 ton) I would say the 3.0 will be more than adequate for me as a compromise..

I'm very much an economy driver who likes to spurt it occasionally..

Ha ha! Well, seeing as you’re saving for a house deposit an extra £3k in purchase cost for an M is a fair amount of money, so in that case I’d say stick to the 3.0. From what I’ve heard their performance is impressive and unless you know what you’re looking for they’re identical in looks to the M.

Luckily you’re in no rush as if you want to stick to that spec you might have to keep your eyes peeled for a good few months... I’d guess you’re prepared to travel for the right one: I flew over to Northern Ireland to get mine (live in London) :o
