Hi folks,

Looking for my first Z and currently confused as to what I want. My head is saying spend £5k and get an older 3.0 floppy top. My heart is saying spend more and get the coupe cos they a gorgeous cars and then my petrol head is telling me I NEED the M!

I've got a max of about £9-10k I want to spend but preferably less.

Anyone know this car? Anyone be put off by the mileage?

Cheers.

It's been up for sale for a long time, and 6 service stamps is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.... average service interval for an M is 12,000 to 14,000 miles. So 6 stamps would be 84,000 miles. Some missing me thinks.

I don't think the mileage is a concern. Plenty E46 M3s out there with 160k++ on the clock.

Up to you, if you could get it for £8k, then you have a cracking car for not much money

Thanks for the interrogation metal licker....

I nearly got a Z back before my daughter was born but both wife and I ended up selling our cars for a Range Rover sensible family daily drive (for her I've got a work van). However now in a position where I need a second car for weekends mainly (football fan so need to get to games) and after seeing how much the prices of z's had dropped I thought best to get something exciting than a Ford Fiesta 1.9TDI etc. Considering I almost paid over £16k for a Z a few years ago. I now also live in the Cotswolds and the roads around here are just crying out for a "Sunday blast".

Hope you're satisfied... :P

On another note, I know the 3.0 v M has been done to death on here, but after driving a Transit can all week for work do you think the 3.0 will give me enough of a thrill? I used my bro-in-laws Boxster S for 6 months while he was abroad and that was a joy to drive and on paper the 3.0 is of similar performance? I have driven 3.0 in both floppy top and coupe but always with salesman so can't really open them up.

The 3ltr is by no means a slow car so I am sure you would enjoy it no end! Can't say I've driven a 3ltr Z but my 130 has the same engine in her and she's been an upmost pleasure to drive... The power is certainly there when you need it. It all depends on how you want your thrills. I've always wanted something to pack a little more lunch and so I've finally found my MC... On the other hand you have to weigh up the running costs of the vehicle and decide whether that would also suit you :)

I was in a similar position to you not even 2 weeks ago had same kind of money to spend want looked at m convertibles and 3.0 coupes

I dont go fast 70% of the time so the m costs kinda put me off a little in terms of nearly 5k more for a coupe tax insurance service costs and extra running costs there are fantastic cars tho

So ended up with a 3.0si coupe with low mileage it was either going to be a high mileage m or this coupe i found with low mileage they do pop up every now and agine Should be easier to move on later down the line and cheaper to run in the meantime 0-60 in under 6 secs is not to be sniffed at :D

There is even a mcoupe with high mileage for 11k i seen fact is selling a high mileage z youll have to price it right and wait for the right buyer to come along when you do sell Nothing wrong with enjoying it in the mean time tho and iv driven a few e46s with over 150k on them still pull hard as anything :driving:

Just go with what you think it right as long as its been looked after you wont go far wrong :)

Anyone know this car? Anything you experts see that would put you off?

He's told me service history is present upto 82k miles.

I rang about that car been up for a while was 7.5k i think when i rang
Fact is for 2k more you can get coupes with 60-70k on so personally id rather that youll always get more back for it in the end

I was thinking of getting it for 7k and making sure its inspection 2 service £400 and water pump belts ect ect and brakes which takes it upto 8k mark maby over
So in that case theres a few tiddy ones around 9k mark with 70k on them :)

Ok so had a couple test drives today.

Drove a 57 plate coupe, fully loaded, really good example with only 40k miles on it. Salesman was young and told me to put my foot down, to which I obliged obviously! Have to say, while it was quick it didn't massively excite me. Seemed a little quiet even at high revs. I know I'm comparing it to the Boxster S which had a lovely note and engine right behind me etc. It drove fine, pulled really well through the gears but didn't give me the butterflies I was after.

Secondly (after a 60 mile drive!) I drove an M roadster and just wow. I think it's the noise more than anything but it was a whole different machine. Was an 07 plate with 70k miles and again well maintained. Again I was encouraged to put my foot down and it felt so much more inspiring. Much more character, mastering the gear changes etc it just felt much more of a drivers car. I wasn't expecting such a difference in all honesty. BUT... I decided there and then I much prefer the coupe aesthetically.

So this is where I am. What I really want is a Z4MC but neither my current budget (or wife) will allow me to stretch to. I'm considering test driving a cheap 03 roadster 3.0. How do they compare against the coupe for acceleration? If that will give me pretty much the same thrill I'll get one for now and wait until I can afford a Z4MC.

Confused! :x

I know what you mean by they dont give you the butterfly's or excitement
I myself came from a 344bhp audi s4 v8 and that was much quicker in all aspect compared to a 260bhp z4c si but the z4c is all about the fact its a 2 seater nimble handling looks are to die for Cheap to run just cruising around i get well over 35mpg for me i just wanted somthing with a bit of speed smooth cheapish to run and looks amazing

Everyone wants different things from a car at different times in life

The z4m either a coupe or roaster is a different beast in terms of pace/speed/noise and if your looking for something with that kinda power you know what cars you should be looking at its that simple lol The z4mc is a great car i will get one myself in 2-3years time myself and in the meantime enjoy my coupe i have :]

I think getting a 3.0 coupe for now and keep a eye on the z4mc prices is a great idea youll save a lot in the 3.0 compared to the boxster and z4mc :D

Told you in my pm you'd end up with a taste for the M! - If you found the 3ltr that underwhelming during a test drive then it's not the car for you. If you splashed out on one imo, you'd have the M niggling away in the back of your mind and you'll never bond with the car. My advice would be to hold out a little longer until you can up your budget. If mileage isn't a factor for you then why not consider Angus' car...

If you compromise too much (i.e go for a roadster when you really want a coupe etc) you'll just end up regretting it and not truly enjoying the car you've purchased.

Similary one could suggest the Z3M - breadvan or drop top but again with the breadvan you'd be looking at a similar price tag to that of an MC.
