Wanted - Multi Function Steering Wheel.

Is the fatter wheel worth the additional £100. I never bothered with mfsw as it was going to cost to much but £140 ish to retro fit seems reasonable, £245 for a new wheel thrown in seems a bit much to me, is it much more comfortable?

I listen to plenty of music in the car and regularly need to adjust the volume,so buttons on the steering wheel are a definite.I was thinking of the retrofit kit,but £145 for a few pieces of wire and few chrome trims and 4 buttons, seems too much to me.Have to say I am sure you can sell the original steering wheel later on and get some money back.

I am sure the sportier wheel would be much nicer and feel more comfortable (photo from the thread mentioned by RichardG)

with regards to retrofit kit,Coopers quoted me £145,but I kind of told a white lie to Oceans of Plymouth and they will sell it for £125 with free p&p (if you are interested in that).

DaveG,thanks for your offer of help ( I was hoping someone would be in Norfolk area 8) ) might get the wheel and see what I can do about the installation.just a bit scared of taking the air bag off and then the instrument cluster

Now you've done it, as I've carbon wrapped my interior the m wheel would look good to complete the dark look. Oh well will have to see how much I get paid next week lol.

I don't think it's worth selling an original wheel, better to sell the m one and put the original back on if you were selling the car.

you have to blame DaveG for this

I think it was Matt (PawnSacrifice) that offered not me :P

I'm in Surrey so anyone wanting help to install in that area I'm happy to help. The guide on here is really good though and is what I followed.

spoke to Joe this morning and mine is on order, should have it some time next week, well excited :D will try and see if I can install it 8)

just one question someone might be able to answer,I was looking at the sideshowbob's guide, why is the top bit of the light switch controls removed?

I've got an SMG i.e. paddles on the wheel... Is there a separate part for this or does the usual M wheel work?
send Joe an email and he'll tell you,or have a look at the realoem website.

Well done on the purchase Navid... :)

The wheel that I snaffled on eBay has now arrived, and like you I'm reading all the guides on the forum in preparation to fitting the wheel at the weekend. 8)

Sideshowbob states in section 7 of his guide that:
"I have undone the light switch centre and pulled it out slightly simply to make the plug easier to photograph. You do not need to do this. You can get perfectly good access through where the instrument cluster normally sits."

So it seems that you don't have to worry about the light switch being shown dismantled.

Right now where did I put the mole grips and the big hammer?

Ian.

Pretty sure i took the light switch unit out. It just made the job easier. The whole job is easy though, the only worry is that you have to put everything back together before you can test it because of the airbag. Therefore not knowing if you need to take it all apart again if one of the connections isn't good.

anybody has got any more photos or tips for when they did their mod? also,as my car is built in 2004,which steps do I need to skip?when does the instrument cluster gets plugged back in?sorry bit cautious about these sort of things.

WIth a 2004 car you shouldn't need to worry about the extra cable and instrument cluster. So, basically you need the bits from the guide for:
1. Disconnect the battery for 20 minutes (important part - I went for coffee)
2. Remove the airbag (fiddly job)
3. Remove the old wheel and disconnect the cables
4. Plug in the cables for the new wheel - extra one for the MF
5. Fit the new wheel
6. Air bag on - connect cables and push into place
7. Connect battery
8. Test and glory!

I'm the same as you, a little cautious with mods, I just take close up pictures at each stage of dis-assembly in case I want to check what is where when I put it all back together. Most of the time I can do that from the camera LCD. This is a simple one though - and the result is surprisingly good, made a far greater difference than I was expecting

Just to say a Big thanks to all who helped, and especially to you for putting my mind at rest :)

I will take photos of each stage and hopefully upload here when it is done.

Always nice to nip in at the end and steal the glory! The pics in the guide are very good.

One thing to note, which may help, on your picture (re-posted below) there are two spring clips (look like big safety pins), those are what you need to push in to release the airbag - that bit took me a while to figure out

Photo058.jpg

The rest is easy really.

Just to reiterate what Dreamer said, if for some reason the buttons don't work and you need to go back in, make sure you wait for another 20 minutes after disconnecting the battery.

don't claim all the credit :D

thanks for pointing out the pins,as was explained in the original post,I will try on the new wheel first to learn what I need to do before I start.

can't wait till it arrive

Ian,have you installed yours yet or waiting for the weekend?

just to say, what a difference :driving: unplugged the battery at 12,waited till my lunch break and with a supervision of a mate, changed the wheel :D

will upload a few photos,I didn't need the extra cable so shall be sending it back to Joe,but the wheel was straight swap and didn't even take ten minutes to install.

Thanks to all who made this possible (now have to pay the credit card bills and buy the cruise control kit  )

and here are the photos:

It arrived this morning, just ordered it on Wednesday (I think)
