Wanted - e85 roof motor

BPM-Z4R, the casing was back order, not stock. Ordered it Friday morning, arrived today.

Both were out of stock when i ordered today but they will get both tomorrow and forward them on so should have them in time for the weekend.

i will take plenty of pics and if there is any i think will be any extra help to an already great guide i will post them up. fingers crossed all goes well at the weekend. :yeah:

http://www.bmwworx.co.uk/ That's who I used located in Birmingham.

I think the cost for the roof motor including fitting was £560. I sorted a deal out for all my work to be done in one go so it varied abit :)

Would you recommend them for servicing too? i don't think its worth getting mine done at a main dealer now due to its age and well out of warranty, but wouldn't mind at least using a bmw specialist.

I used him for a major service 2. When I brought my car needed a lot of things done to it. I basically wanted every filter, belt (not chain), sparks, oil, brakes disks & pads all round oh and antifreeze. Not forgetting my roof motor lol. I like to know my car is perfect engine/handling wise.
He was very good, he said the antifreeze didn't need doing as he tested it. He found one of my links in a bad way & replaced it. He didn't charge me extra for that as the price cancelled out which was honest of him.
His a top lad really, fully BMW trained, his car was recently in bmw performance magazine too. He basically fully rebuilt engine modifying it, doing all the calculations & importing his parts from America. Last rolling road was 600bhp at the fly and think was 480-490 at the wheels from memory.

Got my new roof motor in and working! :D
Was a long day to be honest, but got there in the end. the guide is fantastic.

All I would add is be mindfull of any fluid that leaks, I thought I had only let a little amount escape (half a bottle top worth) when I swapped the lines over but this was enough to stop there being enough umpf to raise the drivers side so the roof was beginning to twist, after stripping back down again and topping the new pump up all was fine.

Apart from this issue the job is not as hard as I had feared and would have no issue doing it again or helping anyone who needs it.

Also got my gap-tech fitted whilst the sealant was drying on the motor housing :D

Congrats, what did the old motor look like? Perfect day to take it out for a spin!!!

It was a real mess, looked just the same as the one in the guide, maybe tad worse. There was also a dirty warer line in the well where the motor sits that was deeper than the motor :o clearly the car has never been garaged, i gave the drain hole a good clean at the same time.

I stood the motor upright with the white/clear reservoir at the top and undid the little allen bolt on top if it and poured a little in.

BPM-Z4R, nice one

I assume you just used fluid out the old motor, yes ? Or did you buy some just in case ?

Yea just used some out of the old one as it was only a small amount

I am getting very jealous of all these pics of people fixing their roofs on my thread

Keep it up though, cos there's some great info in here now

B*stards

:D

As it was such a nice day i manually operated the roof, as i was closing it i thought i would give the motor a shot and it worked............ short lived mind it only worked once...

Any nearer to getting yours sorted Bing mate?

Not yet - not brave or handy enough to do it myself. Waiting or Chris to get back to me, think he's on holiday. Weather looks like it's going to be getting worse for a while, so that'll make it less painful. I hope

Hope it all goes well when you do it :)

Hi Bing, Irish Zed driver here... Just wondering how you got on with the roof repair? My own has decided to go so thinking of doing the work myself.... Cheers

irishz4, ashamed to say I gave in and had my local Indy do it for me today... £300 lighter, but all working fine now

Recently did mine myself and its fine now. Wasn't as bad as I was expecting and the guide on here is very useful.

Few tips:

Buy a new motor housing, not cheap for a piece of plastic but the old one will be soaked and filthy.
Follow old numbers for hydraulic lines and ignor new motor numbers.
Follow old wiring on the new motor too.
Top up any slight amount of fluid lost while transferring the hydraulic lines from the old motor to the new one. I used some fluid from the old motor. You can drain and top up the fluid via the Allen bolt in the top of the plastic reservoir.
Also give drain holes a good clean while the roofs off.

And lastly just take your time and have some help at hand.

I'm no mechanic but am used to using tools and working on cars and found it fairly simple.
