I took a clear one to pieces in the past and added an extra 3 LED's on each side to make it a full width strip.
Worked well until the plastic cracked and I replaced it with new clear one and have not got round to rebuilding my custome unit into it.

I've just spent 20mins this morning doing one of these...

If i tell ya what i'm planning you might want to do it for yourself....
but it's nothing exciting... just to add some extra light. It's annoying as i had my old red one lying around but someones thrown it out! :x All will be revealed soon.
At some point I will do a thread with everything I've done to my car. I'd probably have done one already but I was a bit dissapointed with the amount of people and information already on here about LED door handles etc. and i'm struggling to do original stuff... I managed the external door handle removal tho without special tools
Having done The LED door handles to my old car years ago and been first person to do a write up on it, kinda made me feel like I'm behind the times on this site
still, there's a fair few things to tell.just need the time.

Like i said it's nothing overly exciting,
It's always annoyed me how comletely rubbish the light is in the boot. It's easy to block the light out and it's pretty rubbish even if not blocked, trying to find stuff sometimes is a pain.
Well it took 45 minutes and this is what i ended up with...
It nearly worked as planned...
I was hoping for a white light....Why on earth would BMW use RED SMT LED's behind a red lense? I've never known this before!
So, i've only glue gunned it in place for the moment. It still sheds alot of light and the red is quite cool but i'll either make up my own length of clear LED's or carry on trying to be lazy and get hold of an LED strip or brake light that has white LEDS. So much for trying to be clever and use up an unwanted part! LOL.
p.s. obvious to some but not to others power source was simply taken from the back of the standard boot light. will put it all into a write up someday soon

I'd imagine red led's are simply cheaper.
Interesting idea, not sure how much it would come in handy for me personally but if you like going out late at night and need to stuff "things" in your boot....

Nice try. I would have thought there would be easier and better ways to light the interior but I applaud the effort to adapt and use.
LOL. unfortunately i do seem to find myself out in the dark alot, less traffic for one thing!
yep red would be cheeper, and i suppose the lenses do seem to break alot
I'm not sure, I didn't think it could get much simpler? it was only a case of fold the boot lining down a little, two solder joints and a glue gun.
Just thought I'd save myself £20

Ordinary LEDS would have taken much longer to get all soldered up and wouldn;t have been flat against the top of boot, wouldn't have looked as professional and whilst i know you can get wide angle LED's they give a more focused light compared to the wide angle of an SMT. to buy SMT LED's and individual components to make my own strip is in a different time league. I'd rather have spent the £20
