yup ... any ideas?

i was thinking of chopping the bottom off the tray and replacing it with a flat bottom.
the bottom i was thinking of making on the rapid prototyper i have in the lab out of a thicker bit of plastistic with a recess in it that the ipod will stand in. a bit like the desk chargers you can get.

just had a quote from a scrappy for £30 ... jog on!!

maybe we could combine our ideas and come up with one.

i also thought about making it as an insert for the tray. the shape is a bit tricky.

been looking at the tray on my desk all morining its quite complicated to reprodue the whole tray.

tom the try ive got is pn 7026220 and they are <£15 from soapers so im pretty hapy to start cutting mine up to have a go at this.

want to join forces and see what we can come up with?

Would be good if you could also find a charger that will plug in and slot into the modified ash tray so that the iphone can be charged, held and connected to the AUX port neatly :)

I have been looking into this myself but have had no time recently.

I really need to take some photos of my home made iphone ashtray.

I got an iphone 4 shaped plastic stand off eBay for pennies, then used the back of a DVD case cut up to sit on the top ledge of the ashtray, with a cut out for the plastic stand. I've then dremmeled out the bit where the plug usually goes and areldited the dension gateway 100 iphone plug into it.

All sorted

not far off what i was thinking.

My thought was to get a dock extender cable, so that it can be used with any source either aux or intravee (aux at first, then i will move to intravee).

Then i was going to dremel a hole in the bottome of the tray and mount the phone end of the extender cable in it. To try and make it look neat i was thinking of using some kind of pourable epoxy to get a flat finish around it? I would probably mount a female 3.5mm socket there too that passes through so that when i do eventually fit the intravee, i can just plug the aux wire into that so i still have standard aux input too.

to plug into the current aux lead.

and this mounted with a short wire ready for when I move to a proper intravee solution, plug this into the aux plug so i still have an aux input. this would be a dead socket til then.

and this to connect them:

i would also piggyback a usb charging port to the back of the cigarette lighter.
Does that make any sense?

Tom.

yeh it does, ive just got my intravee so i just want to go stright into it.

what your suggesting sounds stright forward but there isnt much space around the tray which is why i was going to cut the bottom off mine and mount flat base to the tray in the bottom to put these things on. its worth a play for the cost of a new tray from soapers.

Sorry, bit dusty, but this is it finished - I'll look at getting the list together shortly. Planning on painting it black later, gone off the white look :)

that about what i was thinking, except i was going to use the ashtray and chop it in half to retain the way it clips into the recess. its quite a complicated shape.

there used to be a place in america that sold these but they were something daft like $200, i presume you got more than just an ipod dock!!

That's the specdock, and it only gave you an apple connection. Looked very nice, though ... And it's now only £85 apparently linky

if that is literally a pass through of the apple connector that's spot on and cheaper than ive seen them for, but still about 30-40 quid too much for what it really is!

markeg what material is that made from? looks like some kind of tape from that photo lol.

nearly...it's sticky cloth :D.

I used a pass through cable, with a 90 degree bend - otherwise the male connector either sits too high, or too low and you can't get the ash tray in (I'm trying to find it again, took me ages to track down last time - when I find it I'll post a link). It's held in place with some epoxy two-part putty (this) to hold and fill it. The apple tray holder was also held with some epoxy putty. Then I added some cloth over to give a better finish. Still not 100% with it, but it looks fine. Will be doing some more fettling with it, as I want it either grey or black.

Oh, and I added a scosche connector because of the apple 5v pin change with the iPhone 4s.
