Want a meaner sound without changing exhaust..

Hi,

i've done the sound generator mod. And its ok. But sounds very artificial.

Is it worthwhile me getting an air intake to improve sound? Can anyone recommend me one?

I've looked for a gruppe M, but i cant determine whether it will fit 2003 3.0i.

Where's Mr Whippy when you need him? I'm interested to see what difference gutting his exhaust makes...

No idea on the effect of an air intake, but I'd guess it probably makes things more interesting (at a cost though!).
 
An air intake can give a nice sound, growl if you will. You can get the same making holes in the air box. You need to be careful with product selection and placement as the wrong thing will suck in warm air and can lead to a reduction in power, potentially. If you want to go the induction route stick with something others on here have used, that you know wont be detrimental.

I'd be more inclined to got for an exhaust, keep the old piece and swap out before selling... then sell the box separately for minimal ownership cost. As A11y mentioned, Mr Whippy has something in the pipeline that sound very interesting! If you can wait.

Also, try Rudd_2002... I've a feeling he has an induction kit. May be upgrading if you want to nab one on the cheap!
 
I've done the Dinan airbox and Ram Air. I did notice after putting them on, I did get a little more "throat" to the engine, however, it wasn't too much if you're looking for a dramatic increase.

My honest opinion, save your money and get an ///M when you can.

really? That's not exactly a cost effective way of improving the sound... the //M doesn't sound all that different imo.
 
Hey saw my name so I thought id chip in.

I did the sound generator mod a while ago and the in-cab sound is a little better but from the outside there is no difference at all.

I was curious to see what an induction kit would do and sound like so I used a pipercross viper as they have a cold air feed pipe and allowed me to draw air from the normal place.

I was then even more curious to see how much the rpi scoops made a difference but I’m too tight to fork out for one, and they don’t make them for mine so I got some aluminium sheet and went to work with a hammer. Looks good and I was well proud of myself :D 8)

Overall the results are pretty good. I haven’t thoroughly tested anything for gains but the sound is much better. I think the RPI (Rudd Performance Inc.) made a difference to the draw of air because when I first put it on the computer got a little confused and then adjusted to the new air flow.
All in all the sound is much better; you get more of a 'warble' and can hear every cylinder when accelerating. I also seem to get better throttle response with no flat spots through the revs.

to be honest im not too bothered about performance, if i was id buy an M or 3.0. i think our cars are for going slow and cruising with the occasional bit of enthusiastic driving and the 2.5 does that just fine for me 8)

ill have a look for it. i was going to scan it in but its bigger than a4 and it got a little torn up.
i just made it out of an old stella box and then flattened it out into a net

i was going to do a how-to but it was too much of a trial and error.

ill take some pics and stuff tonight so you get an idea of what its like if i cant find the template. i should have thought ahead really :oops:
 
I did the Sound Generator Mod at the weekend (removed the larger piece of foam rather than both pieces) and I was pleased with the results.....nicer noise at higher revs and with heavy acceleration, but largely unchanged at lower revs and when driving normally.

The Z4 is a good sports car, but it's not a super-car and I'm not really tempted to start modifying the exhaust to try and get it to sound like one!!....starting to get into boy racer territory there and there's simply no need!!! I think the loud exterior is best kept with the Ferraris and Lamborghinis

Just my opinion and I know a fair few people will disagree :P
 
dot get me wrong, mine doesnt sound like a corsa with a wheelie bin glued to the back and i wouldnt want it to sound anything like that.

the sound is a little louder and the sound of the engine more prominent but i would say it it more refined rather than loud.
 
Hi Rudd,

Im also hoping to alter the sound of my 56 Reg facelift 2.5i and am reluctant to go down the exhaust route. Can you tell me where you got your Pipercross Viper kit, what it was like to fit and what price. Any help would be much appreciated.
