Wandering and vibration...

Hi All,

I hope someone can help with this. My Z4 is on a 2005 plate and has covered 40k miles.

I have a really strange wandering feeling and also a vibration at around 50mph. The car seems to wander everywhere and I find myself constantly having to correct the steering even on a long straight smooth road. Its quite unnerving at around 70mph on the motorway.

Any ideas? Sorry if I am going over old ground but I have done a search and cant find anything on this? Maybe I am searching wrong.
Cheers

Luke

All wheels need to be balance and then tracked using hunter allignment by the sounds of it.
Use this website to find a suitable garage which uses Hunter equipment http://www.alignmycar.co.uk/ - dont get the bogo 4 wheel lazer rubbish!

Providing you dont get any issues under breaking, the above will sort you out...
If problem when braking i.e. judder - then it could be warped discs...

Thanks Jamie. I will get it booked in and hopefully that will solve the problem. I have also just found a post about lolipops or something could need replacing?.... I have no idea what that means?!!

I cant believe no one has mentioned the run flat tyres!!
Mine felt like the invisible man was pulling the steering wheel around for a laugh whilst i tried to keep the car in a straight line! A new set of decent regular tyres and the car never did it again.

The judder could be as Gannet says worn bushes.

I think the thread you are referring to regarding 'lollipops' really means the front control arms and their bushes... if so then the bushes themselves can be changed - calmed my car down a treat - transformed it :)

FYI my mileage is now 52k, Front control arm bushes replaced late 40's...

Thanks Gannet. So if I get my local garage to replace these Lollipop things (excuse my lack of knowledge) it should make my car feel more stable and me more connected with the steering wheel?

all I can say is that my front control arm bushes (wherever and whatever they are) were changed and although I hadnt noticed a particular problem with the handling.... boy could I tell the difference :o

yes steering feel was a little better, but general composure of the car was in a different league :D

I've had this is varying degrees on my zed.

I had the front bushes changed - which dampened the thrashy/clattering. Makes it a bit more planted too.

then had hunter alignment - which now makes it go in a straight line.

then removed the RTFs (replaced with Falkens) - which reduces the road noise.

but i still get some wandering and steering-tug on rough roads. but i'm putting that down to; a light car with light alloys and slim profiles.

it doesn't like roads where the camber shifts from side to side.

i do wonder whether something else is worn in the steering setup, but the above have made it a more controllable car.

smooth motorways are a dream now. but rough A roads at 50 can be unnerving!

Dump the runflats and get a decent 4 wheel alignment done. Will make a world of difference.Look at bushes etc only if you still feel it needs it.
