The SPECS cameras are now installed. What I noticed is they're on the A54 to Allgreave as well as the A537. I was under the impression just the A537 was going to have them?

Here's some important observations I've discovered. As everyone is aware, the speed limit on the A roads is 50 and the unclassified roads are NSL. Therefore if you look at cameras 1 and 2 on the map it's possible to travel between them on the A537 and the minor road so assuming the trigger speed is the ACPO's recommended 57mph, anyone who receives a citation for travelling between 57 and 60 could easily claim they were using the minor road, which incidentally is quicker than the A537 by having less twists and bends.

Another thing that concerns me is the positioning of the cameras. The section between cameras 2 and 3 is almost perfectly straight and I doubt very much that there have been many accidents there but no doubt this is where most drivers will be caught as it is the only decent overtaking section between Macclesfield and Buxton.

The section between 5 and 6 is totally the opposite of that described above. Between the A537/A54 junction and the A53 there are several tight bends that make it difficult to exceed 50mph between the bends let alone average that speed throughout the section. To get caught means averaging at least 57 and because some of the bends have to be taken at well below 50 you'd need to be absolutely hammering it at speeds which aren't possible given the layout of the road. I even expect superbikes like Fireblades would have a hard time averaging the speed limit let alone exceed it.

To sum it up, the positioning of the cameras does nothing to stop people driving recklessly in the bends since it's nigh on impossible to maintain a constant speed high enough to average the 57 or so the cameras are set to. On the other hand cameras 2 and 3 seem deliberately positioned to catch people on the straight section between the Cat & Fiddle pub and the A54.

Lets wait and see how the accident statistics compare now that the cameras are there.

Watch out for the unmarked police bikes too - keeping your foot in is not an option with one of these :P

Hmmm, I think the main decider for me will be what time i'll have to get up??! What time are you thinking Edward?

I guess these are the options?

M1/Woodhead/M60/M56

Boxton/Sixspeed Route :D

Google Maps quotes about 1hr 40 for the 1st option, and 2hr 10 for the 2nd.... I think with a little spirited driving on clear roads both those times will likely fall by around at least 20-30 mins - the Google average speed for the A/B roads across the peaks is probably around 30-40mph.

The meeting at Queensferry is at 10am, so i guess that means leaving Sheffield by 8am sharp really?

^^ Yup almost

We meet in between Sheff and Rotherham so that makes the little extra time difference (Woodhead instead of Snake)

1:35 or 2:30 according to google... Although i rounded the Peak District time down a bit cos there shouldnt be too many doddery muppets at that time!

Hi,

sorry to hijack :) I assume you are all going to be attending the North Wales run so could you p.m. me to confirm with a mobile number if you wish and details of your car if it's not on your sig. I'll confirm you on the list and p.m. my mobile phone number back to you. Hijack over....

I voted the Manchester route. Would like to arrive in Wales as quickly and as fuel efficiently as possible! Happy to go with the majority though, it'll be fun whatever. :D

can none sheffield people vote?

if i was doing i would just want to get to start point asap, the drive will be a good 1 as it is, leave the other bit for another day

45 minutes extra in bed would be nice. But so would Sixspeed!

I'll just go with the flow i'm easy :)

Right sorry Sixspeed, it looks like its 4-1 at the moment :( Buxton is only 20mins from Stockport so if the Cat&Fiddle cams are there it may be worth you just running up there? Ill update the 1st post with times shortly :)

Btw the cameras will be rear facing as the Bikers are the main culprits!

4-0 really.. the 1 was me! lol

No worries though, I'll have a little blat of my own (unless I wake up late, in which case I'll be taking the motorway route too!)

Thanks for the heads up on the camera positions... might have foolishly thought I could get away with it.
