VW Up!

Currently back to looking for a small hatch to replace the Z3 and narrowed it down to either a VW Up or a Suzuki Swift Sport. Theres not much in it price wise, the VW looks to be much better finished with a wider choice when speccing. The Suzuki is hard to ignore though for what you get for the money but looking at one the other day its a bit plasticky and dismal inside.

I've specced an Up as follows,

Does anyone have an one? I've been reading a few problems with them i.e. noisy gearbox and just wandered if its the norm.

I know the Up is only a 3cyl with 74bhp but will be ideal as a town runabout, cheap to run etc so performance isn't a prime consideration :)

I bought one for my mother in law (the high Up).

Great drive, looks very nice as well. Lots of toys (satnav, configurable screen for media and / or additional meters for oil, water temp etc.

Very complete with PDC, heated seats and all for pocket change money really.

Thanks pvr, I'm looking at the High Up, how long has she had it? has there been any particular problems? Scouring the internet is probably not the best idea as I've found owners disgruntled over noisy gearboxes, paint runs and water finding its way through the bulkhead but I'm hoping these aren't common problems :|

I got a 13 plate (so 8 months now), not a single problem with it.

The only thing she misses is that on her previous Polo there were lights on the central locking switch (which she does use every time she drives away as it does not have drive away-locking). In the dark it is a bit fiddly then to find it.

Paint work is perfect, steering etc is nice - I really like to drive it.

Cheers for the replies and thanks pvr, sounds like its at the top of my list.

I just need to work out what the Z3 is worth which is not easy :?

The "Up" looks a class act on the road Tim , The Swift is aged now but will still do all you want & more .
Tough call

Cheers, I've had a Swift before and was a cracking little motor, used it more than my MINI Cooper S I also had at the time, the Suzuki though you do feel your driving a budget car where I think the Up disguises that somewhat.

Are you in need of rear seats?

I'd (albeit highly biased) would say take a look at the smart fortwo. They're also 3 cylinders and come in 61, 71, 84, 98 and 102 hp versions (the latter 3 being turbocharged, even more fun, not so great on the economy)

Cracking little cars and buckets of fun to drive!

I really like the 'high up' with the extras. Can't justify the cost of a new one just to knock about in but they are quite cool.

Tim you don't fancy an i3?

Can't afford one I'm afraid and I think it would have to be the hybrid as I'm not entirely convinced yet all electric is a winner. The hybrid is quite pricey for a hatch.

Yepp need rear seats that drop so I can get a walking frame in. Taking my 84 year old mum to hospital this week was a bit of a trial in the Z3 with it being low, cramped and got alot of stick for not being able to take walking aids and stuff. Been putting off changing the 3 but havent much choice really.

Remember to go for the 3 year servicing plan, was something stupid like £50 or so.

You know I really should get real and look into something like this. I keep looking at more and more expensive cars when a little fun monster that's this cheap to run I really should consider. £50 for servicing... £250 for crash protecting radar etc... all stuff BMW and the like charge a small moon for...
