VW Scirocco R20

We've been waiting for this. I was looking at the S3 a while ago for the other half but something just didn't feel right about it. The same engine (give or take) in the Scirocco should be a blast, definately something to go and have a look at I think.

I was interested until I read FWD. Why FFS, 260bhp is too much through the front wheels unless you live somewhere where it never rains.

:headbang:

Hmm the more I see it the more I am disappointed about the drivetrain. I could have been seriously interested in one of these, I love the looks.

I am an RWD fan, but I think you shouldn't write off FWD these days. Ford have just shown what can be done with modern technology and 300bhp in a FWD hatch. 95% of the time FWD is better than the extra weight and complexity of AWD IMHO.

As far as the Scirrocco is concerned, I think it looks 8) until it turns round and shows you its ugly rear which looks like it belongs on a Korean hatch!

I wouldnt discount it just yet... the new Focus RS seems pretty able to put its power down... well according to the magazine reviews anyway. Id wait and see what they have to say.

I love the extra aggression that it has over the standard scirocco :D

Interesting you both said the same thing, TBH I hate FWD though, the 4WD was only an option because that's all VW will do.

If they did this RWD I would sign up tomorrow, forget the recession

your micra RWD then :poke:

LOL no but with 82 ponies the chances of spinning the wheels are remote, even less so with super wide 165 tyres on

Joking apart - FWD is pants, this is just crazy power going through the front wheels. No good. This could have been some car too.

I'm very disappointed.

I do know what you mean Mike, my old 206GTi used to struggle to avoid torque steer and that 'only' had 138 ponies pulling it along. Our Saxo VTR with 110 manages just fine though.

Most people buying it wont even notice or use the power available so wont care :?

I could probably live with as a second car though...

I like front wheel drive cars myself. Had no problems with my JCW MINI (210HP). :driving:
I like the look of that one! I like the mini R8 look at the front. 8)

I think it looks great. I saw one in white a bit ago and loved it.

As for the powerful FWD, it's not an issue these days. Ford didn't discard AWD as an option in the new Focus RS, but FWD turned out to be better at delivering than all wheel. Sometimes AWD is not always best, and i'm sure the Scirocco will not dissapoint.

That is true. Bit of an "old man" statement these days that FWD is rubbish! A bit like the old "You have to change your engine oil every 4,000 miles" gag!

Well I hope you guys are right and it drives better than I think. Interesting though I read that the Golf R with the same engine will be AWD, so it seems like more of a marketing decision than anything else. Maybe I need to take a Focus RS out for a thrash to see if it really is OK.

:idunno: :)

funny - I read the same thing in EVO about the Golf R and came to same conclusion. Wouldve thought the other way round would be better.... Scirroco AWD, Golf R FWD :idunno:

guess we will have to wait and see!

But if they did that then the Golf R would just become a "slightly" faster version of the GTI surely?

Suppose that's what the Scirocco is, just a faster version of the 2.0 GT. It just looks daft when VW insist that the 'rocco doesn't need AWD and then they stick it on the equivalent Golf instead. Why not put AWD on both?

... these changes give the new engine 261bhp and 258lb ft ... and the R turns in a 0-62mph time of 6.4 sec, faster than the R32.

Wow, that seems rubbish, and I certainly thought R32's were a lot quicker than that. Consider my 340bhp car *can* apparently do it in 4.9secs, and something doesn't seem right there. That aside, it does look very nice.

Totally agree with you Mike about the FWD.. say what you like about a focus managing to get it's grip down, dynamics being ok, less weight etc.. it's all crap to me.. as soon as you chuck it around a wet roundabout with dsc off it will feel like an XR2i. Don't get me wrong I used to like them, but RWD is scary and makes you respect it.

Understeer is dull, Oversteer is the devil's own work.

Ah, memories of my old MKII 16V where I could hit 70 mph on the counter within 2 seconds or so.

Well - the car was not moving at 70 mph then, but the wheels certainly were and so was the speedo !
