Problem with the Golf is its beautifully built but just looks very very bland and if going from the Zed I would miss something that looks special. This is why I'm thinking of keeping the Zed once the PCP is up and getting a cheaper smaller car, something like the Suzuki Swift Sport and a bit of Japanese reliability best of both worlds then.

Why not keep the Zed and look at the Polo GTI?

Crikey Maniac - for goodness sake just make your mind up!!

The Golf is ok but dull. As ever with a VW/Audi product they make the interior look nice (at a price) and then to make it (relatively speaking) competitive on price they skimp on all the bits you can't see.

The Golf R is just an S3 in different clothing.I think both this and M135i are incredibly dull looking, as is the new S3 too. The S3 has also just been mauled in a two-car comparison with the M135i on PH.

Same advice as before from me - save your money and buy a cheapish run around. I guarantee you won't though! - you've got money burning a hole in your pocket and I don't think you'll be happy until you've got rid of it. You've been whittling about it for ages now!

I had a brand new Audi S4 last year, lovely car but BORING; it just did everything too well. Much happier with the significantly older and cheaper z4.

Thing is I know what you mean. Once you start moving from thinking about changing to actually going to dealerships that's the slippery slope. That's also why I resolutely refuse to go and look at cars at the moment!

Really unsure with the latest GTIs looks although I do like the standard Golf, maybe if it was in red, I find the red stripe through the headlights looks a bit odd and annoying to look at, a bit too much and the tartan seats look a bit dire and trying too hard, can't deny the build though and not far off Audi now.

I struggle to differentiate the mk7 from the mk6.

Madness to even consider a£35k Golf in any guise , i love em , son has a GTI mk4 ,we,ve had a MK5 GT & they are the car for all occasion,s but they aren,t a £35k car
just weigh up the £35k spent elsewhere

Golf,s are great but for me are best enjoyed as a robust do all that can be bought around £10k & still perform with an air of understated class ,
£35k for 1 (especially if its your own hard earned) as opposed to lease just seem,s like financial suicide to me

35k golf? Are you talking the R spec? I remember when i got my parents got me my mK4 gti (new) as a present... Was under £23k! Thats crazy inflation.

And again they're not new cars so you can't compare value. What you're doing here is finding the cheapest of the marque (newly new) which isn't eggs for eggs. Also the golf is £28k unless you add all the toys. Add all the toys to a BMW or merc and see the costs? I'm not saying the golf is cheap but it's not a rip off either, the quality is very good.

Park the £30k whatever Golf next to any of these then weigh up which ones are worthy of the ask , that,s all i,m saying ,the Golf no matter what bell,s & whistles are attached will never look its ask & therefore anyone who buys one with their own cash obviously has it to burn

At £35k I worry about depreciation, we had never purchased a brand new car before the Audi & paid £41k which is very expensive for a TT admitted but its lost at least £15k already & it's only 16 month old plus ours probably won't be worth as much that as its done 38k miles in a fairly short time.

I won't go brand new again but it was worth a try & I just find VAG products over priced unless you go the seat/skoda route & I do agree with mr wilks it's miles too much money for a golf especially when you consider it's performance against its rivals.

Brand new cars are expensive, I don't see the differentiation between a £30k Golf and a £30K 1 series BMW. People choose to buy new and with respect mr wilks your argument is on this basis new or used, there are advantages and disadvantages of both but please don't try to say used is better, as it's all about choice.

However, I would rather have an S3 maniac, just because the inside is a better place to be.

I'm with you Mr Wilks, it's not about new vs old. Where would I put my £35k in a new Golf GTI or one of the samples posted? From the examples posted probably the E-Class, the other question is what is my invested £35k worth in another 3 years?
