VW Golf MK 7 GTI

So, my latest 'car for consideration' is the new MK7 Golf GTI. Not driven it yet but went to take a look today and I have to say, it puts the 1 series interior to shame. It really is very tastefully done with some really nice materials. They've really upped their game VW. I couldn't fault the car, it looked good, it clunked 'like a golf should' with a nice feel to the materials. Super thoughtful design with lots of little 'ooh that's handy' type features. Very impressed. So I'm going to set up a test drive at the weekend and if it drives as well as it looks, its a fore runner. Sure its just another euro box but one that's quite iconic and looks different enough to 'normal' golfs on the road. It is uber practical, hopefully will have comfort as well as some zip, and has definitely peaked my interest..

..so now I await why its a bad choice to clear my rose tinted specs :)

I had a mk5 gti before my type r. It was a fantastic car. Not as fast as others but the drive was awesome and quality was good. Id stay away from dsg box as its either great or terrible though but other than that a faultless car with a good history.

It would be manual, and TBH 30K is not bad money when you see what the kit is. The car has the works, adaptive cruise, xenons, leds, interior ambiance, add in the upgrade pack and get LSD, power bump, brake bump. It really does have quite a premium feel to it. Easily as good if not better than the 1 and 3 series. I was quite alarmed, believing BMW to be premium, and finding VW are doing something that feels just as good. From the video reviews etc on youtube, it seems they've got a good suspension setup, handling good without being uncomfortable. Power is good, lts face it 220/230 is more than enough for road use when you consider its a practical hatchback. The reviews also say its nice and quiet in the cabin, something BMW struggles with, even on that 6 series GC I drove. Really looking forward to a drive of this...

I will clear your rose tinted specs for you...it's FWD & miles too expensive for the performance it offers! You can thank me later! :D

See this is where things start to go wrong... I'm looking at the GTI as I'm anticipating 'enough' power with good handling and comfort. My guess with the R is where it becomes more hard core, which means less liveable day to day. GTI will be fine. Just ran the insurance and though its market value is more than the Z, its a third of the price to insure too.. and less than half the road tax.

Listen to this advice.

It will be the usual uninspiring drive and it's far too expensive for the performance it offers when compared to almost any other hot hatch.

If you do live up to your forum name and decide to buy one then please for the love of god take the advice that Mr Harris gave when he reviewed it.

"Now let's talk about the BMW M135i. I didn't have one to drive back-to-back with the Golf, but it does pose some very awkward questions for the VW. For starters, I think it makes the case for a fully-loaded £35K Golf with performance pack, leather and all the toys look very tenuous indeed. The Golf is a beautifully executed everyday package, but the BMW's performance is on another planet. So I think the Golf is actually at its best lower down the price range because it needs to be nowhere near that pesky 1 Series.

Take the base three-door for £25,845, keep the cloth, the brilliant £525 Dynaudio hi-fi system and the dampers and leave it at that."

The R will be 4wd apparently as it will pretty much be the same as the new RS3 so just drive one of them instead. Problem with the R is that I bet it will come in at closer to £40k in it's basic form. You can do much better than a golf on steroids for that money.

there is a guy at work which got his 2 weeks ago...

nice enough.. but imo at £32k+ and piss poor VW service i would personally give it a miss.

My first and last golf was in 2000 when i had a mk4 1.8T.

...sadly no dealer contribution to it, and, a near six month wait too.

Then you put it against this;

£31K, which is what a bare bones car would cost... but this has nearly £5K of options.. for the price of a bare car.

I just don't like the beamer... inside and out I think its an ugly car IMHO... and love the look and feel of the Golf...

I do love the M135i as a package but I do agree the looks are challenging to be fair & I would struggle to buy one myself, I do think at that money a car should tug on the heart strings visually but that doesn't but the golf doesn't do anything for me personally either.

I have always had Golfs in the household and still have. A 1 series just does not do it for me at all (driving position is hopeless).

The Golf is just a Golf, and I sure prefer the drive even though it is front wheel drive, it just drives nicer.

I had a mk5 edition 30 with all the toys and a remap. Awesome bit of kit and the VW dealer was excellent.

Not tried a mk7 but have heard good things.

Most reliable and fuss free car I've ever owned was a VW Passat Sport, it just worked.

I looked at a VW High Up the other week and what a brilliant little car, classy fab interior and well built. As already mentioned having had a few F20 loaners I was quite dismayed at interior quality and looks of the non M sport models, especially after reading all the plaudits of it over the previous E87 of which I had 2. When I jumped in the F20 I was completely underwhelmed with interior quality and felt it was no great step up from the previuous generation although it did ride and handle much better. If going for the golf then I would go for entry level spec otherwise if you push the price up to near M135i levels albeit a standard M135i I would still go the 1er, you can't ignore that power advantage, way more than the golf, I actually like the F20s looks in M Sport guise but you only get one choice of alloy style on the configurator which are not to my taste.

Problem with the Golf is its beautifully built but just looks very very bland and if going from the Zed I would miss something that looks special. This is why I'm thinking of keeping the Zed once the PCP is up and getting a cheaper smaller car, something like the Suzuki Swift Sport and a bit of Japanese reliability :) best of both worlds then.

Why not keep the Zed and look at the Polo GTI?

Tim.
