Hi There :D

I have been lurking for a while doing some research as I am very very tempted to make my next car a Z4!

I am originally a bit of a VW fan and have spent the past few years restoring a Mk1 Golf (which is older than me  ) It will be 29 next year! The next logical step seemed a Mk5 GTI as they really do capture the fun of the original but with nice extras like crumple zones and side impact beams  but I by chance noticed that 3.0 Z4's go for similar money and it suddenly seemed crazy to buy "just a hatchback" when I can get a cool 2-seater roadster 8)

It would be great to point out any good buyers guides or frequent problem areas with the Z4s incase I have missed anything? Otherwise I will leave you to enjoy some photos of my current pride and joy wearing its winter wheels! :D

Hi and welcome
This should help. http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21281&start=0

Welcome  nice work on the Golf kept it simple kept it clean  like pic 2 often have a beer after washing the Z admiring my work :D

I would find it hard to give up a car after spending 2 years restoring her or do you plan to keep her and run a Z ?

Still got my mk1, 17 years old now :D

Never sell those cars.

Hi and welcome.. I've owned a couple of VW's in the past.. but i'm a definate BMW convert now!!

Very nice Golf - if it was me, I wouldn't be selling that even if it was for a Z4. Keep it AND get a Z4

I looked at mk5 GTIs (amongst other things) before getting my Z4 but as you say, it was the attraction of getting a 231ps RWD roadster for not much more than a 1-2 year newer 200ps FWD hatchback that swayed it for me.

Andy - welcome to the forum  General buyers guide in the link in my signature which hopefully covers most issues. Golf looks excellent and good to see you have kept it original. Good luck in you Zed search.

Thanks for the warm welcome :D :D

I have been reading the guides posted with interest, thanks for those

Argh, you are making my decision even more difficult, I fancied selling the golf and running the zed daily but everyone I speak to says to keep the golf too... I hoped coming on a BMW forum I would get the opposite advice but you are all saying to keep it too!! Its a tough one for sure, 9 years of ownership as both a primary and secondary car, a complete nut and bolt rebuild, everything mechanical replaced along with new trim, interior, paint, etc etc! It certainly does feel like a family member!

I was also looking at the 330's as they are surprisingly good value for money!! Does anyone have any views on them?... not nearly as special looking as the Z4 IMO though

Looked at the 330 3 years ago when i bought my Z was told by my mate who is a tech for BMW they are a good car but really glad i did not buy one as the Z is so much more car unless you want an A to B car and the fact you put so much into that Golf tells me you should by a Z4 more of a hobbie than a car :D

Hi

Nice Golf dont sell, keep it under wraps that puppy will be worth a furtune in years to come.
I too am in the hunt for a zed but currently run a 51 plate 330 sport .My 1st BMW great value for money even though thay seem to hold they price. If you want fun 4 seat praticality with reliablity and will keep up with most in real life sistuations you carnt go wrong. But if like me you realy in to your cars then i think you wont be disipointed with a zed.
Save up keep the golf happy hunting.

Hello Andy, and welcome! Nice golf, as the others have said - 'keep it and get a Z4' if you can manage it, I've always loved the MK1 - you've probably invested a lot of time effort and money in getting it to how you want it, it's a matter for the heart really, I reckon you'll only regret it later if you did get rid of it.

Just out of interest, what are those alloys? they do look period, definelty in keeping with the old-skool car - I like! :) (the can of red stripe is a nice touch!)

That Golf brings back memories for me. I owned a 1980 (called a Rabbit here in Canada), back in 1997. Absolutely loved the look of the car and visually it was mint inside and out, even thought the car was over 17 years old. Unfortunately for me, the car was a mechanical nightmare and I had neither the cash nor the know-how to keep it running. Broke my heart getting rid of her. Keep that Golf!!
